    1. [ILJODAVI] Elizabeth Cookbook index -- reposted
    2. Fairchild Friends
    3. Some folks must have missed this because I am still getting numerous queries on surnames and first names. I hope it is okay to re-post. All names in the cookbook are provided below. I know nothing on these families. I am willing to re-type a recipe or two, but for larger requests I suggest you wait until I scan it all and get it to Cheryl for the USGENWEB site. Due to the number of pages and my schedule, it will take me a couple of weeks. Thanks for your patience, Chris originally posted on 4/4/00......... A couple of quick notes: 1. the cookbook included no photos or graphics 2. I am working with Cheryl to get the whole thing on-line, but this may be a little while 3. I am not sure how well this will work below, but took this approach since we can't use attachments on the list. -- Chris Here goes.......... <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> The Reliable Cook Book vouchered for by The Ladies' Missionary and Aid Society of the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church "She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness." Leonard Jeweler & Watch Repair NOTES FROM INDEXER: I have typed names as they appear and made no effort to combine likely persons (i.e., Mrs. Charley Rowley and Mrs. Chas. Rowley). I will leave such assumptions to the reader. For those names with the same page numbers appearing twice, in most cases this indicates that the person had more than one recipe appearing on the same page. I thought this would be useful to give the reader a quick indicator of the number of recipes submitted by any one person. However, the reader must remain careful and vigilant-the page numbers in this book are out of order, with some page numbers (not pages) even appearing twice. I found no indication of lost pages or rebinding, so I must assume this was an editing error at the time of printing. Overall, the book is in fair shape given its age and obvious use. The pages have browned. A few rips and stains are present, but all printed text is very legible. A small number of additional recipes are sewn or pinned into the book. The binding and cover have no text or graphic, but are in good shape. The cookbook contains no photos or graphics. I could not decipher one of the names from a handwritten recipe in the back (a Mrs. George ________ ). The handwritten recipes in the back are in a number of different hands, which indicates that the "submitters" likely wrote the recipes in their own handwriting. Many of these handwritten recipe surnames are common to the Elizabeth area. submitted by, Chris Straight N13577 North Alma Center Road Fairchild, WI 54741

They had ten children: Allison, James, Jerusha, Thomas, Charles, Julius, John, Charity, Lydia and Gaius. The family moved to Jo Daviess county, IL in 1854. Most of the children eventually moved further west to IA, NE, and KS. Son Charles was the only child to spend his remaining days in Jo Daviess county. He married Nancy REED and had several children. I'd like to find out more this family, especially this children. I have lots of gaps in this line and would love to fill it in. Anyone else searching this line? janet young berkson

    3. I have been impressed with the interest my posting has generated. I didn't even realize there were so many folks on this list. The cookbook had no surname index, so I have begun to create one. I hope to have it completed by tomorrow night and I will post it here. Cheryl can take it for the USGENWEB site if she feels it is deserving. I have decided that I will be donating the cookbook to the Stockton Library or Elizabeth Historical Society. The folks in Stockton have been very helpful in the past, so it would be a way to show my appreciation. However, I would also like to see it stay in Elizabeth, but I know next to nothing about their Society. In any case, which ever gets the original, I will provide the other a photocopy. I will also send a photocopy to Galena (and, of course, keep a copy for me). 3. Elizabeth does have a Historical Society.I met one of it's members of a trip there last June. She is Marilynn Hollond, 2476 W. Lone St. Rd. Elizabeth, IL 61028. The Historical Society is relatively new and has been focused mainly on the railroad to date much to her distress. I'm sure that she would be interested in your cook book. Incidentally, she lives in one of the two houses that remain at the site of Weston Village, 3 miles west of Elizabeth. The cemetery is all that remains of the original Village. 3. A few weeks back, an offer was posted for an Elizabeth Cookbook. I quickly responded and the cookbook has arrived. I was told there was interest by others, so I thought I'd send a small report. There can't be many of these around. It was "vouchered for by The Ladies' Missionary and Aid Society of the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church" and printed in Fulton in 1895. Though it appears to have been well used and is worn with numerous small rips, most everything is very legible and the cover and binding is in good shape. At least one page is missing. It is about 145 pages total and 4" x 6" in size. A few additional recipes have been sewn, pinned, or written in, demonstrating its good use. Only one name is written in..... Mary Goldsworthy. It appears that many of the ladies submitting recipes were the wives of prominent local business men, who are listed in 8 pages of advertisements (about 3 ads per page) in the back. Some surnames include, but are not limited to: Arnold, Hutchinson, Fraser, Westphal, Robinson, Howarth, Waters, Eustice, Eaton, Lee, Hitt, Bastian, Eadie, Coveny, Blake, Hansen, McKee, Long, Schrade, White, Wilcox, Atchinson, Armitage, Overstreet, Clegg, Chapman, Stewart, Marshall, Eby, Hutton, Dittmar, Wishon, Brown. In any case, it is really neat reading. I was really impressed with all the candies, deserts, cookies and 12 pages of pickles! But with recipe titles like Pressed Tongue, Frogs, Mock Duck and Plain Economical Soup there are a few items which I am not in a hurry to try. Since it included only one very distant relative of my family, I am considering donating the item to a local history group or making it available for re-sale. Does Elizabeth have a Historical Society? If possible, I would like to keep it close to Elizabeth, where in might be shared with others who have an interest. In the interim, I am available for look-ups, though some surnames like Fraser have so many entries I would be reluctant to re-type them all. Chris Straight Fairchild, WI

    3. I am new to this list and I am looking for more information about Crowell Evans Morris. There is both a father and son with this name and any information about either of them would be greatly appreciated. Current I know that Crowell Sr was born in Woodbridge, NJ and was married to Nancy (Von) Vooris they moved to Galana in about 1854 and had the follow children some of which appear to be born in NY and others appear to be born in IL. Cyrenius Evans, Helen R (Married Rufus Tucker), Nathaniel V, John Evans (H) Morris, Harvey A, George V, Frank A, Julia A (died young), Crowell E and William E. I believe that Crowell and Nancy are buried in ELMWOOD CITY CEMETERY, however Crowell name is spelled Ordwell in the index. The other interesting thing on that index is that the bio that I have says that he died in 1901 and the index says 1891, however both show that he was 73 years old. From here it appears that Crowell Jr and other siblings moved to SD abt 1888 - 19?? and then to Pasadena, CA by 1912. Cyrenuis however moved to Coon Rapids, Carroll County, Iowa. Any information that you have that might help me would be great and I will gladly share my information with someone else. JenniLyn Carnes
