Posted on: JoDaviess County Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/JoDaviessObits?read=143 Surname: HICKS, WINSKILL ------------------------- WILLIAM HICKS DEAD The death of William F. Hicks, a veteran of the Civil War and for six years a highly respected resident of this city, occurred at the family home on Franklin street atabout 1 o'clock this afternoon after a long illness with diseases incident to old age. He had seen seventy years of life. A wife three sons and a step-daughter mourn his departure. The funeral will be held Sunday after- noon 2 o'clock at his late home under the auspeces of E.D. Kittoe Post, G.A.R. of this city of which he was a member. The Galena Daily Gazette Galena IL, Fri. Evening Aug. 18, 1899 Reel # A3763 - -------------------------- THE LATE Wm. HICKS As was briefly mentioned in these columns last evening, the demise of William F. Hicks occured at the family residence on Franklin Street at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon after a long illness caused largely by hardships suffered and ailments incurred while serv- ing as a soldier in the Civil War, During his six years residence in this city he was obliged to get about on crutches and for the past two years he has been unable to leave his home at all, being confined to his room the greater part of the time. Death came to him as a decided relief from constant suffer- ing and helplessness. Mr. Hicks was a native of Kentucky, where he was born Jan 9, 1829. When a compara- tively young man he fitted himself for the position of veterinary surgeon in which profession he eventually became quite pro- ficient and which he followed during the larger part of his after life until incapaciated by ill health. In March 1864, he enlisted as a member of Company A, Ilth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served with distinction until the close of the war. For a short time after the conclusion of that bloody strife he located with his family at Elizabeth and from there went to Wisconsin, residing much of the time at Boscobel and Lancaster. About six years ago he with his wife took up their residence in this city where their home has since been and where they have a large circle of warm friends. Besides his wife he is survived three sons, Frank of St. Croix Minn., Charles and William also reside in Minnesota and one daughter who is married and lives in Lan- easter Wis. The deceased was a member of the G.A.R. Post of this place and though having resided here but a comparatively short time, he was greatly respected throughout this city and leaves many friends to deplore his death. The last sad rites over the remains of the departed soldier, husband and father will be observed at the family residence at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon where services will be conducted by J.S. Yundt of Grace Church. The members of E.D. Kittoe Post will attend the body. The Galena Daily Gazette Galena Illinois Sat. Evening August 19, 1899 Reel Number A 3763 - ------------------------------------- Dr. Hicks Dead. Dr. William F. Hicks, the veterinar- ian, resident in Lancaster some years ago, died in his home in Galena last Friday. His death was from affliction that has clung to him with serverity for years. He had:not been able to move about without crutches for years, and, was not able to leave his house past two years. His broken constitution is attributable to the hardships and exposures in the Civil war. Dr. Hicks was as a native of Kentucky, born January 2, 1829. He fitted him- self for the veterinary practice when a young man, and followed the profession until incapacitated by ill health. He was a member of Co. A Ilth Wis. from March, 1864, to the close of the war. After the war he located st Bos- cobel, and next at Washburn in this county. Later he resided in Lancaster, going from here to Potosi, and six years ago he and his wife moved to Galena, where the Galena papers say "they have won a large circle of warm friends." Three sons-- Frank, Charles, and William, survive. Frank resides St.Croix; Wis. The daughter who was married while they resided in Lancaster, died two years ago. Mrs.C. W. Burrows, of Lancaeter, is a step- daughter. Dr. Hicks was a member of the Lan- caster Tom Cox Post, and the Galena E. D. Kitto Post buried him under the honors of the G. A. R., with religious services by the Rev. J. S. Yundt, on Sunday. Lancaster Teller, Lancaster Wisconsin 8-24-1899, Reel # P76478

    3. I just wanted to remind everyone that there are GenConnect boards at the Jo Daviess USGenWeb site that are specifically for posting Bible Records, Biographical Sketches, Deeds, Newspaper articles, Obituaries, Pension Records, and Wills. These boards are not being used very effectively, yet they are very important to your research. Every entry onto these boards are automatically indexed through the GenConnect worldwide indexing system. This is a fantastic tool not only for your research, but for connecting with others who are researching your same lineages. Also, please keep in mind that we have the ability to submit family group records to the Jo Daviess BB. If you have Jo Daviess ancestry, this is another source that would be very helpful for you all to use. I'd just like to encourage everyone to use these resources. -Cheryl Hemingway [email protected] <http://users.rootsweb.com/~iljodavi> Jo Daviess Co., IL USGenWeb <http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/HomeonWeb.html> Cheryl's personal website

    3. I found out about an hour ago that my great grandfather, William WOODWORTH had land in JoDaviess County instead of Hancock county, where I had been searching to no avail for these past months. Is there a JoDaviess query board for me to post? I am now researching all the cemetaries in the county for his internment. Is there a newspaper there that might have printed his obit in 1889? Any information anyone may be able to afford me on this will be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any places for me to research in that area that will benefit me, I would graceously accept them. There was an L.P. WOODWORTH that worked for the county as supervisor(?) He had 2 sons, 2 adopted sons and a son-in-law in the war between the states. He lived in the town of Courtland. Can anyone give me a lead on who he was/ His parents names/his wifes name, and names of his sons? Also names of any family members. I know this is a lot of questions and I do not expect quick answers to them. I have been researching him for 25 years and don't expect it to end in a few days, believe me!!! <G> Thank you in advance.
