Contact the County Clerk and Recorders Office. Here's the address and phone number. I have included the County Clerk's name as well. Jean Dimke Jo Daviess County Courthouse 330 N. Bench Street Galena, IL 61036 815.777.0161 According to the JO Daviess County Reference and Yearbook 1999-2000: The Recorder's office maintains the index and records of all property transactions. All real estate documents, corporation papers, city and village ordinances, tax liens, both federal and state and other miscellaneous documents, together with all members' of the service separation and discharge papers are recorded. Each document is assigned an official document number at the time it is presented for record and is entered in the proper entry book and indexes for quick reference to record retrieval. Records date back to 1829. I work for a Civil Engineering / Surveying firm and I use this office quite frequently, and I have always found them very helpful, and eager to help when I have been looking for parcel information. Usually they charge 50 cents a copy for any documents. I would call them and tell them what you are looking for, and ask them if they can help you in some capacity. On the Jo Daviess County site I have ran across the "1855 Personal property tax for Jo Daviess County " This shows a "Augdoah Shaw" on page 183 in Pleasant Valley Township. I am researching for an "Angeloah Shaw" and he appears on the 1860 Census for Jo Daviess County. I live in Spokane WA and cannot go to the Galena Library to look at these records. Does anyone have acess to the 1855 pp tax records? If so would you be willing to lookup the information on this Mr Shaw and let me know what it is? I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for your assistance. Thank you very much i really appreciate your help. Frank Hotaling [email protected]

New to List: Looking for other descendants of Lewis and Mary (Kirkpatrick) Williams, who lived in the Vinegar Hill area of Jo Daviess Co. in the 1850s. Their first four children -- James B. (m. Sarah Bradford), Albert (m. Jennie Charter), Ella (may have died young) and Francis (m. Nancy Baer/Bear) were likely born there. Family later went to Grant and Richland counties, WI. Other children are: Jesse Darwin (m. Mary McHone), Amasa Cobb (m. Addie Mosher), Eliza Jane (m. Charles Dary) and Mary Almeda (my GGM, m. Lewis Fry). Scott Thomson [email protected]
One way to obtain land records is by finding your nearest LDS Family History Center, where one can order films on land records. I would first check their computer catalogue and get the film numbers you want to cover your time period for both the Grantor and Grantee index and order the films you need for 3.25 per film. Then you could order the land record films you want for your time period. This method sure worked for me. Aline

They had one known daughter, Lillie Belle White. Lillie married Martin VanderStarr. Would like to hear from other people who are researching these families. Kathy
These are two separate families. I have been indexed the high school annuals for Elizabeth schools for 1840s and 1850s and have run into lots of Kelehers. Marge
Any information any one might have on Keleher surname, or Koehler surname and if any one might have any idea if they were one and the same or different. Sharon
A very dear friend of mine (who's 100 years old!) has asked me to find out a bit about her family for her. Her husband's maternal grandfather was Abram Clark KINNISON. Abram Clark KINNISON was born 25Oct1851 at Nora, JoDaviess Co. His parents were William Wilson KINNISON (10Nov1810 - 27Aug1890) and Frances "Fannie" DeHaven (c1815 - 09Aug1892). William owned personal property valued at $971 at Nora in 1855. Abram Clark KINNISON m'd Cora McBRIDE (06Nov1850 at IL - 21Jan1889 at Bedford, Taylor Co, Iowa) in 1870 (don't yet know where). Their children were Claidest (Glade), Nettie, Fannie, Edna, Hope and Dawn. The first two chn were born in Nebraska bet 1872-1875 (according to the Taylor Co, IA census of 1880). Their third child, Fanny, was born somewhere in Missouri c1877. The younger ones were all born in Bradford, Taylor Co, Iowa, bet Nov1879 - 1888. I'd love to hear from anyone who can connect with this line! Diana M Austring ~~~~~~~~~~ Waiheke Island, Aotearoa (NZ)

Richard, Your inquiry about the Angwin-Tippet family is very interesting to me in that they may have sailed from Cornwall to Quebec. The Richard Gill family in my line also came to America form Cornwall either in 1840 or 1842. They initially went to Missouri where I believe that Mary (Glanville) Gill's cousin was located. They arrived in Missouri by river boat. After a short while they relocated to Weston Village (near Elizabeth) where Richard Gill was a miner. In 1867 they moved to Kansas. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to locate the entry point of the Gills into the United States from the National Archives ships passenger lists. If they came to Quebec as the Tippets, then Canadian records might be the place to look. Are there any Jo Daviess listers with Cornish ancestors who arrived through Canada who have information on how to trace these arrivals? Ralph Ralph Anderson Boulder, CO [email protected]
Richard and Fannie (Tippett) Angwin immigrated in 1842, from Cornwall, England, to JoDaviess County. The discription of there journey is recorded in a brief biography of Francis Angwin's brother, Wm Tippett, in the "1889 JoDaviess County Biographical Album" which states: Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Tippett emigrated to America on a sailing-vessel, and six weeks from the time of starting landed in Quebec, Canada. Thence they came directly to this county, via Lake Ontario to Kingston, thence to Buffalo, and from there to Chicago. From the latter point they journeyed overland to Galena, wher they spent two years, our subject most of the time engaged in mining on his own account. Thence they removed to Weston, where they lived three years, and in the fall of 1847, during the excitement in the lake Superior copper mines, Mr. Tippett went there with his wife and one child and spent five years. I am seeking any information, advice, help of any kind, in finding out the name and the type of sailing-vessel they came over on, how they might have come over-land (stagecoach?), what conditions were like, etc. Do any of you have relatives that crossed that same year? I would appreciate anybody on the list that could assist in anyway, big or small. Thanks in advance for your help. Warmest regards to all, Richard Angwin
Posted on: JoDaviess Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/JoDaviess/737 Surname: Bonson, Waller, Spensley ------------------------- I think your Margaret was a brother to Richard. I'll have to find proof of his relationship to Mrs. Samuel Hughlett and Mrs. Richard Spensley. I'm questioning the name "Robert" has a survivor in Margaret's obit. Robert was the father. David Morris visited this area returning to England to write a book "The Dalesmen of the Mississippi River" published by William Sessions Limited of York, England in 1989. I think I've seen it for sale in the used book stores on the internet. He says that 10 Bonsons came to this country with the Waller family. The Bonsons were from Gunnerside in the Swaledale region of Yorkshire.
It looks like my ancestors left little evidence behind. Martin Hayes was in Jo Davies County in 1850. He died in Panola County, Texas in the 1870's. Is there anyone out there who recognizes the name. He is reported to have married a Joanna McCarty. Thanks, Gerald ********************************* Billie and Gerald Ford Beasley, Texas (near Houston) [email protected]
Marjorie, I don't know anything about the Bonson family, but I am interested in the Watts family of Jo Daviess county. Do you have any more information on the Harriet Watts you mentioned--parents or siblings? My connection comes from James B. Watts (1817-1876) who came to Illinois from England (by way of Chicago) in 1834. It appears that he came with several siblings to Jo Daviess County, but I only have information on the above James and sisters Sophia and Catharine and brother William who probably died without issue in 1881. Other siblings may have been Henry, Eleanor, Sarah and Elizabeth. Leslie Marjorie Smith wrote: > Posted on: JoDaviess Co.
