    1. RE: [ILJODAVI] Records of Lead Mine Workers?
    2. Jim White
    3. In Galena, much of the infrastructure follows old mine shafts. Most of the watermain and sanitary sewers in the downtown area are in horizontal mine shafts and filled in with tailings. Every farm I have ever been in seems to have two or three old shafts on them, and where I live in Galena, there are two old shafts about 2 blocks away from my house. The Galena Library would be a good starting point for mines and miners that worked, and lived in the area. Eagle Picher had a large mine in the Galena area and they may know of where you can find out further information on mines in the area. -----Original Message----- From: Marjorie Smith [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 11:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ILJODAVI] Records of Lead Mine Workers? I don't know of any all encompassing records. Prior to the big mining companies probably every man mined a little hoping to get rich. Farmers mined in the winter when they didn't have field work. Prior to 1830 there is the Smith-McKnight papers at the Galena Public Library. Included in that, is a book that every miner had to signed saying they would abide by the regulations of the Federal Government. There are mines under my town of Ellizabeth, under Galena, reportedly 300 mine shafts under the Ciity of Platteville, WI. 3. I have a Jo Daviess County Farm Directory issued August, 1930. It is organized by Township. For each farmer it gives the post office address distance and direction from the post office telephone number where the owner or a renter varieties of live stock and poultry bred I can not look up one name as I would have to look it up in 23 different townships. But would be glad to help if you know the township in which they resided. Marjorie Smith

    3. Nancy, I spoke with my Grandfather, and he says that Hammond cemetery was located just south of Stockton at the intersection of Center Rd. and Airport Rd. where Highway 78 now runs. He said that the cemetery was on the northwest corner of that intersection. He also says that there is still one stone standing there. If you have a plat map of Jo Daviess county, it was in the very middle of the very bottom of section 14 in Stockton township. Hope this helps. 1. [ILJODAVI] 1860 Census Lookup, Anyone?
    2. Diana M Austring
    3. I've been looking for the family of my Cora McBride born 06Nov1850. I'm not sure where, but she married a Nora, JoDaviess boy (Abram Clark KINNISON) in 1870, so I'm hoping she's FROM JoD. I've been told that there was one family in Jo Daviess named McBride that could fit the bill. (Cora would have been born after the census was taken.) This is the family (from Mill Creek, Jo Daviess Co. pg 145b): John McBride 28, Farmer b. in IL Sarah " 30, KY Charles W. 13, IL Levy P. 6 IL James A. 2 IL If anyone has the 1860 census, would you be able to follow this family (IF they're still there!) and see if they have a Cora aged 9? I'd also LOVE any information about any KINNISONs from anytime! Thanks! Diana M Austring ~~~~~~~~~~ Waiheke Island, Aotearoa (NZ)

My WHITSON's who died in 1856/1860 were among those moved. Had "heard" that it was moved from Pleasant Valley Twp because of a highway that was going thru. 2. J. Melssen
    3. On eBay auctions I also found 'the young men of illinois july 1898', second quarter april-may-june 1898-vol.19 #2. The picture shows a booklet and on the green cover the title 'Our little friend of the Netherlands Dirk and Dientje' and 'Carpenter'. On the cover a picture of a windmill and a boy pushing a sledge with a girl in it. Did the Dutch emigrants in Illinois (and in Jo Daviess) had their own magazine? Jan Melssen
