Friends Again, Please forgive my Great-great-grandpa Tyrrell. He may have been a lousy speller but he left us some wonderful records to help untangle the records that got mixed up by his children and grandchildren. Ray Justus Chandler, AZ
Hey guys did you check out that new marriage list??????? Sorry I had to do this to the list - I 'up graded' the other day and lost some addresses. I have just finished re-indexing the search engine at the Jo Daviess website. Since there are LOTS of new marriage data there, you may want to check it out. -Cheryl Hemingway [email protected] <http://users.rootsweb.com/~iljodavi> Jo Daviess Co., IL USGenWeb <http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/HomeonWeb.html> Cheryl's personal website http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/RubberTreasures.html> my Close To My Heart (rubber stamping & scrapbooking) consultant page.
Marjorie has been a very busy lady! Today she send the marriage data for 1855-1870. The data contains the name of the bride and groom, marriage data, and the volume and page number that they are contained in the Jo Daviess Co. marriage records. Please remember that no futher data is available from those records because Jo Daviess County did not keep detailed marriage licenses. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN, Marjorie! -Cheryl Hemingway [email protected] <http://users.rootsweb.com/~iljodavi> Jo Daviess Co., IL USGenWeb <http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/HomeonWeb.html> Cheryl's personal website http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/RubberTreasures.html> my Close To My Heart (rubber stamping & scrapbooking) consultant page.

Marjorie Smith, Hannover, and Daryl Watson and others of our Jo Daviess group Thank you for all your information on Alfred Mueller. If this email duplicates my email to Hannover, sorry, but my gratitude to Alfred Mueller deserves to be spread to all of us on the Jo Daviess website. Alfred Mueller is my idea of the ultimate genealogist. In 1983, my aunt and mother and I planned our "Great Trek" into the past. I had been working on the HART family history for about 7 years prior. First we flew from San Francisco to Denver and searched Denver, Central City, Cripple Creek and Victor seaching for the graves and sites of my great grandparents. (Michael Hart was a miner) Then we flew from Denver to Chicago/Dubuque and drove to Galena. Michael was raised in New Diggings/Vinegar Hill. (Some of you may rmember my article about howe we locked ourselves out of our rented car on Vinegar Hill!)His parents (my great greats Thomas and Bridget Hart) are buried in back of the priests home in Benton, Wis. Right over the stateline and Vinegar Hill. We stayed in Galena at Mrs. Kelly's beautiful mansion which was right next door to the Historic Belevedere Mansion. Mrs. Kelly gave us the name and address of Alfred Mueller and we started corresponding. He had invited us to drop in when we got to Galena and so we did. We had a very nice visit in his home and he brought us to the Library and I gave it a copy of the list of names mentioned in the diary of my great grandfather, Michael Hart. Since Michael was a miner, he moved around to many places and I am listed on 5 different rootswebites. I have helped many people doing lookups, etc. Alfred Mueller really served as my model of a truly generous and kind and dedicated genealogist. I know we thanked him in 1983 but is if any of you can send or print this email and give it to him--I'd really be grateful. I want him to know that he wasn't forgotten. Thank so much for the information on Mr. Mueller. He was so kind to my aunt, mother and I back in July of 1983. We had traveled all the way from San Francisco and stayed at Mrs. Kelly's mansion which was right next to the Belvedere Mansion across the river and on the hill overlooking the railroad station and downtown Galena. He welcomed my aunt, mother and I into his home for nice visit. He even took us to the Library too. I gave him or I left a copy of the names I crossed-indexed from th diary of my great grandfather, Michael Hart (years covered in the diary 1853-1878). Mr. Mueller really loved history and especially genealogy. In fact, he sort of became my model in all this genealogical research. I have now spent almost 25 years on the Hart history. The Internet has opened up a whole new means of communication for all of us. I am so thankful for the Internet and to the Jo Daviess websitesite and especially to Alfred Mueller. If anyone of our Jo Daviess group can make a copy of this email and give it to him or the Galena Library and his friends, I really appreciate it. Thanks to Roberta and Marilyn for pointing out the problem with the marriage links on the website. I have checked all the links for the 1855-1865 marriages and found the problem. It's been fixed now and hopefully they will all work. Please let me know if you have further problems. -Cheryl Hemingway Close To My Heart Consultant <http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/RubberTreasures.html> Rubber Treasures

I am thinking I read in the Galena Gazette that he had to go to a nursing home recently. I could be wrong. I imagine his wife is still in the house which was not far from the library. The gentleman that volunteers at the library (genealogy dept) in Galena on Saturdays would know. I know he is a friend of Alfred's.
Alfred Mueller was featured in the November 15, 2000 issue of the Galena Gazette when he was presented with the Illinois Humanities Council's Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award. This award honors people throughout the State of Illinois who, as volunteers, make a significant contribution to their community. Alfie is in the Galena-Stauss Hospital Nursing Wing. He misses his large collection of photographs which are still in his home. He spent hours organizing them, getting negatives made, and helping Galenians who were trying to preserve their historic homes. At the Galena Library he answered mail of people searching their ancestors in Jo Daviess County. He compiled books of information about the former residents. These books are now in the Galena History Room which was renamed as the Alfred Mueller Room. He always greeted me with "Hello Lady." He didn't remember my name but he knew who I was and always asked about my sister. He gave up working at the library when his eyesight started to fail. Alfie is the one you should thank for much of the cemetery transcription that appears on the Jo Daviess web site. Alfie suffers from Parkinson disease and his wife can no longer care for him in their home, so he has moved to the nursing home. I'm sure he would appreciate hearing from those he has helped or corresponded with in the past. Marjorie Smith

I think so. He used to live on the same street as my Grandmother, and he really was a walking book of knowledge of Galena and Jo Daviess County. I know that he donated a TON of stuff to the library, and they named it the "Alfred Mueller Collection". I'm fairly certain he is still with us, there is still a listing in the phone book for him. -----Original Message----- From: JOSEPHINE HART [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 10:53 AM To: Jim White Cc: [email protected] Subject: RE: [ILJODAVI] Records of Lead Mine Workers? I knew that many people moved to that area in pioneer days to work in the early lead mines. One man whom I have some information about who did that, was named Benjamin SALLEE. It seems they movd to different areas to work on different mines. I also know of some others, like James GHOLSON, who did the same thing, but I have communicated with some of that family. Never have made contact with any of the family of Benjamin SALLEE and would like to, if there are any. Thank you to those who responded to me privately.
