To the best of our knowledge, our Conleys came to the US - New Jersey prior to 1800. James Conley, a wife and at least one son, William. From NJ they went to Ohio and then to Pike County, Ill where the first James died. His son William had died while the family was in Ohio. William had at least one son, James who was born in 1818 in NJ. Would be nice to come up with a connection. We are not sure where in Ireland or the United Kingdom the first James Conley came from. Happy hunting

Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/JoDaviess/10854 Surname: Conley ------------------------- Carol, I have Conley's from Jo Davies County. Have a John, but not this birthdate - however have a John born 1841 in Pike County. My Conley in Jo Davies County was William, the oldest brother of a John Conley from Pike County. The following information is what I have collected concerning the military career of my John. This information came from Illinois State Archives. John Conley from Company K, 16th INF from New Salem. Find John as a Private aged 19, 5' 9" light hair, blue eyes, light complected, single and a carpenter for New Salem, Pike County, Illinois. Joined the service May 24, 1861 for 3 years, he reinlisted as a veteran. Was mustered into the service at Quincy, Ill on Feb. 19, 1864. Have two possible marriages from Pike County, neither one is going to give us him being the father of your John. One was in 1863 and the other in 1866. I don't know any more about my John Conley born in 1841.
As a note a reference my PA families DERSHAM and RITZMAN (Stephenson Co., IL) came from Union Co., PA near Milton, PA. They had arrived in PA in the mid 1700s and moved to IL in the 1850s and 1840s respectively. Dennis
Mary Swanson, my gggrandfather also came to Jo Davis co. from Pa. He was from Mercer co. Pa. and arrived in the mid 1850's. He settled in Elizabeth. His name was John T. Young and he brought his wife and family with him. Yes, they did come in groups but of course I hav'nt any idea how many came with him. Hope this helps. Leona
It appears that many of the early settlers in JoDaviess Co. and neighboring counties came from Pennsylvania...as did my g.g.grandfather, Andrew H. Mitchell according to census records. Does anyone know which counties in Pennsylvania were the starting point for many of these early JoDaviess settlers? I'm trying to find the PA county where Andrew Mitchell was born and since people tended to migrate in groups, he probably came from the same PAa county as other JoDaviess settlers. Andrew was born about 1820 in Pennsylvania and married Ann M. Fitzsimmons in 1847 in JoDaviess County. Thanks, Mary Swanson [email protected]
It looks like the fictitious Family Discovery genealogy service has moved to Prodigy now. I contacted Prodigy this morning and they have asked that anyone who receives solicitation email from familydiscovery.com to take the following steps immediately: 1) Forward the entire Family Discovery message to: [email protected] 2) Include the following information (most of which was provided by Rita from the Oconto County, WI list): Please note that the attached message is now being sent through your ISP service. They have been reported to various State Attorney General's Office on computer fraud, but it is hard to catch up with them. Originally the "company" linked to free information sites and placed the pages in "frames" so that it looked like it was their own work. Customers paid for that information. The scam, now, is paying for the free information links and then they "move" frequently and leave their paid-up customers without services. 3) Post these same instructions on any other lists today so that Prodigy has a better chance of finding the spammers. -- Linda Emerson Coordinator - Union Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/townships/Union.htm

Is there anyone who has access to cemetery records? I am looking for Anna Wood. She was supposed to be buried there in 1933 but could not find her on the web page for Greenwood Cemetery. She died January 17, 1933 and was sent to Haudenshield Funeral Home for burial in that cemetery on January 19, 1933. If anyone is able, I would pay for a picture of her grave. Lead mining throughtout the area also had a major impact on area history. If you find that your ancestors were from one of the communities that is now 'a place in the road', there is most likely a local person or family that will know about that community or area. May you have a successful journey and enjoy your time in beautiful Jo Daviess County. mrstwinkle _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Hi I visited the Elizabeth Library about 2 years ago. It is not too big and I did not find much of interest on early history. They did not have anything on local genealogy. Elizabeth has a fledging Historical society but at that time was mainly interested in the railroad. Maybe they have branched out by now. The Apple River Fort Museum in Elizabeth is worth visiting if you have an interest in the Black Hawk War period. There is plenty to keep you busy at the Galena Library. The local history room was only open several hours a day when I was there so you need to build your schedule around their hours. You should also plan on visiting the Galena JoDaviess Historical Society. They have great exhibits and a good selection of books on local history for sale. I stayed at a bed and breakfast just across the river which was within walking distance of the Library and this worked out quite well. You should enjoy your trip. Hi Listers, I am beginning to plan my May 1st trip to Jo Davies County and surrounding area. Beside the genealogy section of the Galena library I know the Stockton Library is a must, but what about the Elizabeth and Hanover Libraries? Any good stuff there? Does anyone know the hours they are open? I forget the different types of 'courts' there are in Galena, and what each holds that would be of interest to someone searching their family records. Would someone be so kind as to describe the different courts and what they hold. Any other suggestions? Thank you Dorothy searching Conley, Breen, Garrett, Bell and others

We would like to invite you to visit The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have recently posted links to the IRAD (Illinois Regional Archives Department)regarding the following: The Almshouse Registers for the Poorhouses in ADAMS and JoDAVIESS Counties have been name indexed! And these are now available on-line. DIRECTIONS: At our homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then click on ILLINOIS in the table of states. Scroll down to the section titled RECORDS. Our site will only grow to include more ILLINOIS information through the suggestions and submissions of readers like you! If you would like to e-mail me, please do so OFF-list. Hope you enjoy the site! Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
FYI -- Just found out that the National Archives has replaced the old NATF Form 80 with NATF Forms 85 & 86. Form 85 is used for Military PENSION Records and Form 86 is now used for Military SERVICE Records. I already need to update my website! And I guess I can throw these old NATF Form 80s away. Howdy folks, Myself and a few others have been slowly sorting out the different 19th Century Bowden/Bawden lines. I have compiled this information and have placed it as a "project" at my website. As new information is received, I will update the web page. Also, I am using the website to list the different Bowden/Bawden researchers and offer their e-mail addresses, if they are so inclined. Contributions are welcome! http://www.win.bright.net/~mjolby/index.html My website also includes a few genealogy links and provides a brief ancestor report. Most of my paternal ancestors date back to the mid 1800's in Jo Daviess County and includes the following surnames: Straight, Inman, Billings, Chase, DeGear, Hancock, Breed, Cook, and Bowden. If any of these surnames are of interest, take a look at my Ahnentafel or send me an e-mail. I'd be very glad to here from you. Additional projects on some of these other surnames will be added to my website in the future. One of my West Virginia cousins was asking me about researching our shared Civil War veteran. So I pulled together a summary on performing civil war research and have included it as a link on my "Links & Stuff" page. Otherwise, I hope this find everyone well. Best of luck with your respective research projects. Chris Straight Fairchild, WI
