Jemima (maiden name unknown) HUGHES was born 1810 in KY. She married Unknown HUGHES likely between 1830 and 1833. They produced four known children: Stewart HUGHES, b. about 1834 in IL William M. HUGHES, b. about 1836 in IL John Robert HUGHES, b. about 1838 in IL Lucinda A. HUGHES, b. 1 April 1841 in IL By 1847 Jemima and the children were living in Lamar Co., TX, but no male head of household was present. On 20 October 1861 after the children had left home, Jemima married George G. Keyes in Lamar Co., TX. Stewart disappears after the 1850 census. John Robert enlisted for Confederate service and died 15 June 1864 at a Union prison camp (Camp Morton) in Indianapolis, IN. Lucinda married William H. Burrous in 1859 in Lamar County; she died 7 February 1870 leaving her husband and two young sons. She was buried in Lamar County. William M. married and lived until about 1878; he left his wife Lucinda and four young sons. Jemima died in 1884 and was buried in Lamar County. In life Jemima had connections to Lucinda HUGHS Martin and John W. HUGHS. Both Lucinda and John had Jersey County connections, and John has been linked to Macoupin Co. as well. Did Jemima and her family live in one of these counties? Because the 1840 census lists only head of household, I have been unable to locate Jemima's family. Any suggestions--any help will be welcomed. Lorene Hughes Vanzant [email protected]
