Is there an easy way to find the locations of all the cemetaries in a county. is there a map showing where all cemetaries are located? Don
I know that someone did a list of burials back in the 1960's or 1970's. However, I know of several burials in the Pruitt-Hawkins Cemetery which are not listed. Of course, I'm sure that the inventory was done by reading the stones at the time. I did find some stones there which were and are still quite legible but are not listed in the inventory plus there are several burials without markers. Someone has been trying to keep the cemetery up during the past few years. Whoever it is I would like to thank them. There was a time when no one really cared and the growth was so bad that you almost had to wear boots and old clothes, wade through the grown and hope and pray you found who you were looking for and not find any unwanted visitors along the way. It does appear that during one of the major mowings that at least one stone if not more were damaged/destroyed and are no longer in place. I'm sure whoever did it did not mean to do it unless there was a vandalism which no one seems to be aware of. What happened to these stones I don't know, but I do know that I have a photo of all that I know who are in my family and one if definitely not there now and last seen was still quite legible considering the death was in 1840. As for location, I've seen several sites which try to give the location but they are either incorrect in the coordinates or the list is incomplete. As for Pruitt-Hawkins, it's out in the boonies. Take IL 16 east out of Jerseyville. Turn north (left) onto Rangeline Road which is probably about 4 to 5 miles out. Then go north on Rangeline Road for about 5 miles to where the road appears to curve to the right (90-degree turn) but also has a gravel road to the north and another to the west. Make this curve and go down about half a mile to the Bethel Baptist Church (hopefully this is the correct name). There is a gravel drive/road next to the church. Turn south on this gravel drive and take it all the way down the lane going past a house on your left. Down the lane it will curve (90-degree turn) to the left but there will be a private drive to your right. It will appear that you're in the middle of grain fields, but go down a little way until you see a lane which is grass covered on your right. Turn onto this grass lane and go down as far as you can. There will be a small hill at which point you can stop. Weather conditions of recent days will determine if you should go any further by vehicle. You can see the cemetery in front of you. There really isn't any good turn around in the cemetery, so you may have to back up the grass lane to get out. I tend to go during the spring of the year in case the grass in the lane and cemetery are not cut as short as I would prefer. Last I knew the cemetery was on property owned by descendants of James Pruitt who's buried in the cemetery and donated the land for it. Believe the descendants are through his son Amos Sr via his daughter Amanda who married Lawrence Johnson. At least this is what my father told me and he knew the family. It sell for a mere $30 and contains the names of more that 26,000 graves and 150 of the 200 plus graves located in Jersey county.
