Illinois Place Names by James N. Adams (reprinted 1989). p. 452. Newbern (Jersey). (a) Now East Newbern (Greene-Jersey atlas, 1893, p. 79). (b) PO est. (changed from Eminence) 8/28/1834; changed to Dow 6/3/1896; changed back to Newbern 7/12/1897; discontinued 4/20/1811; {!! I suspect that means 1911. We weren't even a state in 1811!! K.C.} now RFD Dow. Pop. (Rand McNally 1958) 35. (PO in Greene Co. prior to creation of Jersey Co. 2/ 28/1839.) page 342 = Dow (Jersey). PO est. (changed from Newbern) 6/3/1896; changed back to Newbern 7/12/1897; Dow PO reestablished. (Newbern PO continuing) 7/6/1898; active; RFD serves Beltrees, East Newbern, Lock Haven, McClusky and Newbern. Formerly Lofton's Prairie. Pop. (Rand McNally 1958) 150. In my 1984 Rand McNally, Newbern is still on the map but Dow is not. I'm afraid this doesn't help much. However, there is a WONDERFUL map site, which should be of interest to you. It is through the University of Illinois. I've only used the maps to look at townships up near Kemper. If you compare a number of maps, you ought to be able to see any name changes in that area of Jersey Co., too. If you can't get to the maps, contact me at rchrdcck@aol.com, and I will see if I can help you. Kathleen (STANFIELD) COOK
