Newbern is a tiny cluster of houses and farms a few miles south west of Jerseyville.A little town call DOW is right next to it.Dow has a Post office I think so it should be on a map.I used to live at Newbern .You need to look for Highway 109 coming into Jerseyville and in that general area will be Dow and Newbern. ----- Original Message ----- From: <KJasper@IJ.net> To: <ILJERSEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2004 4:04 PM Subject: [ILJersey] Re: Newbern, Illinois > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Ig.2ADI/858.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > I've never received a reply. I don't think they're the same George Martin. Ours was born 1906 in Jersey County Illinois and lived near there all of his life. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of mlowrance@nww.net Sent: Monday, July 26, 2004 5:00 PM To: ILJERSEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILJersey] Re: George Martin This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ig.2ADI/1158 Message Board Post: I found this article in the Jersey County Democrat, dated May 24, 1867. This is exactly how it appeared: OLD CITIZENS Below we give the names of persons who have resided in Jersey County from 40 to 57 years. Col. Black, Delhi; Col. Van Horne, Delhi; Wm. Kelly, Kane; Jos. Lurton, Newbern; Chapell, Newbern; Thos. McDow, Newbern; John Davis, Elsah; Geo. Thompson, Grafton; John Lofton, Fieldon; H. N. Belt, Fieldon; Chas. Bethell, Ill. Bottom; Orman Beaman, Otter Creek Prairie; Tarlton Brock, Otter Creek Prairie; Jas. McKinney, Jerseyville; Ezekiel Chance, Fieldon; Jolm Brown, Jerseyville; Isaac Terry, Elsah; E. Bray, Grafton; John Gillmore, Jerseyville; Isaac Sinclair, West Woods. Many of these gentlemen came here while the country was a wilderness. No cities, no towns, no villages, no fine residences were here then. These broad cultivated fields of grain, these rich andulating meadows, these high roads of travel, these puffing, and endlessly grinding mills, these fine churches and these many school-houses have all grown up under the eyes of these good old pioneers. They paved the way for civilization, and wealth. They endured hardships that we can never know. They have seen many changes and witnessed many strange scenes. We laugh and sing and dance and make merry, never casting a thought upon these sturdy old Fathers of our now happy little County. They will remain with us but a little longer, and we think it would be but a small tribute of respect to these worthy old settlers, for the citizens of Jerseyville to offer them a grand entertainment, a feast, a day of "good times" and kind remembrances.

Also, regarding the McDows, there is a large assortment of donated items regarding the McDows at the Elsah museum. Well worth seeing. On display was the WWI uniforms of Dewey McDow and the Civil War Discharge Papers of William McDow. I took pictures of the gravesite of the Marshaws. Benjamin Spry Jr. (one of my husband's ancestors) murdered Rowden, and Peter [along with Ben's brothers John and Henry] was there with him. This all happened January 6, 1880. Peter spent some time in jail following his capture. Ben was convicted of murder. They were taken to Madison County nearby because a lynch mob wanted "to decorate a tree with them." If you want more details, let me know. I don't know when Peter got out of jail or what happened to him.
