Dear List Members, I have just learned that RootsWeb list mail was down for about 12 hours starting about 3:30 AM MST today (the 18th). The problem has been fixed, but unfortunately all messages posted during this period of time have been lost. If you posted a message to the list since early this morning (the 18th), and have not yet seen it appear on the list, then you will need to re-post it. Thank you for your understanding. Hi Since there is so much movement on this board, thought I would try again. My Michael Crimmins was living in Jerseyville, IL in 1916 with three sons. Then they disappear. Does anyone have any information on them. What were the sons names? Were they farmers? Did they go to school? Did they work? They must have left some kind of mark there. Thanks for any help. I picked up your post that was gatewayed to [email protected] I am descended from the WORTHY's in Jersey Co. I have an Aaron REED (believe he is William Aaron REED) who married Susanna WORTHY. Susanna was born about 1852 in IL. They were married 8/24/1878 in Jersey Co. Let me know if this looks familiar. I have more information on Susanna's parents and siblings. Dick Harlan

hi, Laura i went up to jerseyville one afternoon [not even a whole day] from St. Louis. what an enjoyable trip! they must've moved some things, cuz I went directly to the courthouse & everybody was so helpful! I'll pass along the one tip I learned... if you are researching any land plats or deeds, do that first. then go for the marriage, birth, death, etc. records. you can get lost reading stuff all day but then you'll get back home & wish you'd gotten the land info [i did, anyway]. probably the best part of my trip was seeing the population sign as I entered the southern end of town... the town has grown since I was there as a girl, but the population hasn't grown all that much; small town midamerica still lives! if only I'd saved time to stop in at the White Spot before I went back to st. louis! :) have fun. kirby in NC [email protected]

Thanks to all of you for research tips to Jerseyville. I was hoping to go there next Tuesday (11/20). I will e-mail Marty directly regarding opening the museum. Looks like there so much to access it'll take more than one day!! Thanks again to all who responded. Laura St. Louis, MO
Welcome to the ILJERSEY. In all the years I've been on this list, this is the most I've ever seen commented. It's a good thing. However, I must set a couple of things straight. Linda Crotchett and her girls are no longer in the court house. They are across the street in the old Methodist church. Again, Methodist. The Baptist church is across the street as well. Don't go in the wrong building. For those of you who don't know me, I'm the person who does the Jersey County Historical Society's web site and their newsletter. I am also one of the volunteers who work at the museum/genealogical research room. I also operate the gift shop there. Right now the museum has NO heat and is closed, but if you are coming to Jerseyville one of us will open it for you to do some research. DRESS WARM! Much of the research material at the court house and library is also located at the museum. I know because we donated it. Much but not all. The museum is not the Cheney House. Completely different! The museum is under construction. This is why no heat. But folks are coming from far and near and need their "genealogy fix". We know this. We are addicts as well. We will open. But again we are volunteers and have families too. Call me @ 217.942.6615 or e-mail me @ [email protected] or mail me @ Marty Crull RR 1 Box 9 Carrollton, IL 62016 and we'll work something out. My experience with the Court House people in Jerseyville has been excellent. They are very helpful, especially the staff in the County Court Clerk's office. You will want to go to the Jersey County Historical Society, as that is where there are a lot of records. It was recently moved to North State Street and is in the old Cheney house. I do not know the hours it is open and would suggest you ask at the County Court Clerk's office who you should call to find out, probably Bob French or Gene Prosser. If you call, they can have someone open it for you if you happen to go there on a day when it is not scheduled to be open. The Census records are at the Jerseyville Library, which is across the street from the Court House, and everyone at the library is wonderful to help. They have the microfilm of the original Census, and you can make photocopies of the pages you want to take home. That is very useful, but it takes a lot of time to go through the Census of each year it was taken. You might find it would expedite matters to have in mind the exact Census you need to look at. Good luck! Jean Landon Wallace
RMILLER- come on now, we're just sittin round the ole wood stove "talkin", we're not fussin or fightin, just shootin the breeze...you know, like the ole boys did at the general store or the ladies did at the Tuesday Quiltin. So let don't get our dandruff up....Jerseyville is a good place to me in my memories as a little girl, and Laura is going to find it a good place too... We can make lemonade or lemon pound cake or rinse our hands after a mess of cat fish-it's all about how you choose to use the lemons. > >
In all my visits to the county courthouse in Jerseyville IL, I have yet to receive any type of trouble or problems. All the employees have been very cooperative. I., living in CA and just went to Jerseyville to do research. The County Clerk there is very, very helpful, and I was always greeted with a wonderful attitude. They will bring you all the index books to research. Dave
Hello, I didn't count on having a problem emerge on the list quite so soon, and I guess I got into this situation late and don't know what has transpired (nor do I need to know). But it should be said that we all have different experiences with each and every situation we encounter. I will contact RMiller privately, and I hope the rest of the members of the list will just let this situation fizzle out and stop at this point. To continue to bicker would serve no purpose. If anyone has helpful information to share, please continue to send it to the list. I thank you all in advance for your cooperation, as it will take everyone's best efforts to make this list a comfortable place for all of the members. I really hope that no one is chatizing anyone here. We are all here to help each other. I hope you won't quit because of this subject. I, too went to the courthouse and had good luck there. But as for the rest of the town - I can honestly say that it seemed liek I couldn't find anyone who lived there to help me find anything. No one knew where the library was or anything that could help me with my search. I probably should have asked the folks at the courthouse, but I didn't think of it then. We all catch folks on a good day or a bad one = we take our chances, here on the list or at the courthouse, or on the streets of a strange town. Nil illegitimus non carborundum.
