Sorry, Marty, but in that I do appreciate the site and what you personally have for it and the Society, I have to agree with Sara about the copyright issue at hand. I worked in an educational institution's printing operations for 23 years and part of that time was responsible for adherence to the copyright law. I attended many conferences and the copyright law was always a hot issue. As a result some of the top lawyers and experts in the copyright law field were on hand to discuss and answer our questions. Any information on a website which is considered to be in the public domain is not under the copyright law. This information is those records which are more than 72 years of age. Some of the information on the JCHS site may have copyright protection, such as design. However, information on the site which can be obtained by any individual by writing the respective institution holding them or in person at the said institution is not protected by copyright. If they were then these records would not be readily available to individuals upon request. There are some records which fall under the Sonny Bono Copyright Law which increased the number of years an item is protected by copyright and in some cases provided the copyright holder has applied for the allowed-by-law extension period. Tom Thanks for the input on the Pruitt and Bradshaw families. I already had them as I've at this for 20 years now and am trying to get some of the younger generations connected into the family. There is still a group in Greene County IL which appears to be related but how is the question. I know it goes back to James (1788-1857) Pruitt's brothers but when you have 6 boys who name their sons after their father and brothers you come up with so many first cousins with the same names and have a hard time putting them in the right family. Dorathea Behrens (Frederica Dorathea Behrens) married Cosmos Keller, Sr. in ELsah in 1856. The 1870 census says she was born in Hepen. There are 2 towns in Germany with that name (Hepen and Heepen). A woman of the same name is on a passenger list with an 18 yr. old George Behrens. Interested in any clues on her family or life. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am descended from Cosmos Keller of Elsah and Wm. Knapp who also lived in the Elsah area and belonged to the Catholic church at Beltrees. Cosmos Keller and his brother Louis Keller came from Gambsheim (Alsace) France ca. 1854 to Elsah. I am interested in learning more about Elsah's Alsace immigrant population and who they were. Some other people from Gambsheim also seem to have settled in Elsah. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Hi, I am researching the Zachariah/Zachery Hughs/Hughes and Sarah Bain family and Moses Martin and his children by wife Elizabeth Carrico who died before Moses Martin and his family came to Jersey county. Zacariah Hughes is thought to have been born May 6, 1799 in North Carolina and died July 8, 1854 in Jersey County, Il. SArah Bain was born in Blount county, TN on October 5, 1803 the daughter of Daniel Bain and Sarah Ross. Zacariah and Sarah's daughter Lucinda Hughes married the son of Moses Martin. His name was Benjamin Vincent Martin. Benjamin vincent and Lucinda Hughes martin move to Texas about 1845-47. We have much information about them after that move. however, we know that Zacariah and Saran continued to live in Jersey county, Il and Lucinda had siblings. The 1850 census for Jersey ounty lists Zachery Hughes age 51 farmer and his wife SArah agd 47 with the following people in their household: John 20; Mary age 17; Zachariah age 10; George White age 5; Emily j. 3; Nicel age 40 cannot read or write (idiot); Soloman age 20, male. So we know that Lucinda had these siblings-what happened to them??? Did she have older siblings who had als married and left home by the 1850 census? There were also some Hughes who moved to the same area of Texas as teh Martin's is anyone knowledgable about other Hughes? Did Zachariah Hughes have brothers or other relatives who moved with him from North Carolina to Illinois. Any other Hughes reserachers on the Jersey county list? Thanks so much for any assistance. Hi, I'm researching the Pruitt and Bradshaw families along with their allied families in Jersey Co IL. Originally Martin Pruitt came with his family from Washington Co VA to Greene Co TN in early 1790's and then to what is now Madison Co IL in 1806. Some of his family (children and grandchildren) settled in what is now Jersey Co. Most prominently was his son James and his grandson Amos (James' son by his first wife). James and Amos settled in the Ruyle and Fidelity Townships area. James along with his brother Abraham were the two instrumental in catching up around Virden with the Indian who had one of the scalps from the Wood River Massacre. Amos was one of the first county commissioners in Jersey Co. Jonas Bradshaw came from TN and probably settled in the Ruyle and Fidelity Townships area. Other allied family names include Vaughn, Lampkins, Rowden, Gilworth, and Ruyle. Debbi Geer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Good Evening, I thought perhaps this might be a good time for me to give a status report on the membership of the list. As of this evening, there are 101 subscribers to ILJERSEY-L and 45 subscribers to ILJERSEY-D, for a total membership of 146, and we are getting new members every day. So, as lists go, our membership numbers are not bad - our only problem is there are very few messages being posted to the list by the list members. Most of the messages coming through are coming as a result of postings to the Rootsweb message board. I think this might be a good time to let the other members of the list know something about our Jersey County connections, what information we are looking for, and what we can offer to the other members of this list in terms of sharing research and/or resources. NOTE - and this is important: I am NOT suggesting what is commonly referred to as a "ROLL CALL" - on a list this large, that would be a real disaster. So, do not put ROLL CALL in the subject line. I am, however, suggesting that we introduce ourselves to the other list members, and post at least one really well thought out inquiry in regard to the research we are doing. This will be much more productive than just sending a list of surnames to the list - and you can send as many different queries as you like. So, if you have posted inquiries to the list, and still don't have the answers you are seeking, post them again. VERY IMPORTANT and helpful to all of us: Please let the list members know if you have resource material you can share and if you are willing to do some "lookups" [be sure to set YOUR guidelines for the information you require in order to do the lookups]. SO. let's get some action going on the list. Remember that this list, or any list, can only be as active as the participation of the members. This can be a very productive list, with lots of helpful information flowing back and forth . . . we just need to get back started. A few helpful hints for posting: *** Subject Lines: Do include your surnames (in Caps) in the subject line. Also include location & dates. Then include them again in the body of your message where you give the full details of your ancestor. If your details are sketchy at this point, then just put what ever you do have; sometimes the most minor of details can often provide the breakthrough. *** Answering: If you able to answer another member's query, then please share that answer with other list members . . . UNLESS, the reply is very specifically directed to the poster [such as, "we have a Bill Smith living next door ... could he be yours?"] If your answer will be of interest to other list members, then please share that with the list. *** Quoting: When responding to a query on the list, by all means quote the original message so that we ALL know what you are talking about. BUT, edit <snip> the original message to just illustrate the part which you have answered. List Mode members, also <snip> the 'tag-lines' from the original post. Best wishes and good luck with your searches. Karima Allison ILJERSEY-L List Administrator
