    3. My family member was married in Jersey Co., IL by a C.H. Foote. There is no indication on the certificate, I received, if C.H. Foote was a Minister of the Gospel or a Justice of the Peace. Does anyone know? If a Minister of the Gospel, what denomination? Thank you, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

I found my gggrandfather in the 1865 Illinois state census under the name Ostin. He and his wife and children appear on page 356 of the Otter Creek District. George H. Austin b. abt 1819 in NY, married Lucinda Jones b. abt 1830 in Ohio. They had 7 children: Julia, Rosa, Florence, George Washington, Cora, Dexter, and Charles. I am unable to find George H. and his family anywhere in the 1860 census, or 1870 census. The family appears again in the 1875 Dakota Territory census and the 1880 South Dakota Census in Moody County. Lucinda is now missing from those censuses. Subsequently George H., Julia and George Washington Austin move to Mitchell, South Dakota. Julia and George H. appear together in 1900. George W. appears with Anna M. separately. Let me know if any of these names appear familiar. Charles was born abt 1869 and appears subsequently in Moody Co., S. Dakota so I doubt if Charles Auston buried in Jersey Co. Ill could be the same one. I do recall seeing another Austin family in Jerseyville or the surrounding area on the 1865 census. We had to search page by page to find my family. They do not appear on the indexes.

I do not find Alonzo and/or Sarah Dowall Nelson listed in this ledger. Regards. Jean Landon Wallace

    3. Hi my name is Tom McGowan, i was reading your inquery into Nelson family. I live in Streator , Illinois. Several Nelsons in phone book here. Also what caught my eye in the posting is the name , "duhadway", that was my greatgrandfathers middle name who was born in Jerseyville , Illinois in 1867. His full name was James duHadway Ballard. I had often thought it was a very unusual name and where it originated from. If that name Ballard comes up in your searches please let me know, i do have some but verylimited info on them.
