Blessin, 87, of Peoria Heights died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Cornerstone Rehab Center in Peoria Heights. The youngest of five children, he was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Mount Vernon, Ill., the son of Edward R. and Rosa M. (Barber) Blessin. He married Irene A. Nelson on Dec. 26, 1948, in Peoria. They were married 62 years when she preceded him in death in 2011. He is survived by his sons, David W. (Vickie) Blessin and Stephen W. (Nancy) Blessin; and his grandchildren, Jennifer, Matt, Sarah and Curtis. Charles and Irene were actively involved in the Christian Science Church most of their lives, and he served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. Charles worked for the USDA Northern Regional Research Center for 30 years, where he received numerous awards, including a Superior Service Award from the USDA in Washington, D.C. He was retired for 34 years, and for much of their retirement they lived in Mira Loma, Calif., and Yuma, Ariz., before returning to Peoria. Cremation has been accorded, and no services will be held.
