    2. Walter Rosemond “Uncle Walt” Mays, 80, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 10:40 P.M. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at White Oak Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. “Uncle Walt” was born on Tuesday, January 24, 1933 in Durant, Mississippi the son of the late Charlie Clarence and Eunice Bell (Moss) Mays.  He married Vernetta McGee on December 18, 1950 in Beardstown, Illinois and she preceded him in death on June 15, 2007.  Surviving family members include his 3 daughters: Roseanne Region of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Barbara Coomer of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Rhonda Gray of Scott City, Missouri; 3 sons: Dale Mays and wife Connie of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Robert Coomer of Fairfield, Illinois and Darold Hicks of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 2 sisters: Kathleen Heck of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Jessie Scholfield of Centralia, Illinois; nine grandsons; nine granddaughters: thirteen great granddaughters; seven great grandsons; six great great granddaughters; one great-great grandson; several nieces and nephews also survive. His parents, wife; one son: Dennis Eugene Mays, one daughter: Wanda June Leverton, five brothers: John, Clarence, Tom Ed, Carl and David Mays, and three sisters: Myrtle Mays, Mary and Mabel Kirk preceded him in death.    Uncle Walt served in the National Guard, was a truck driver and retired from Hogan Trucking as a truck driver instructor, was a lifetime member of the Mt. Vernon Eagles Aerie Lodge #2791, he enjoyed watching stock car racing and NASCAR and was of the Baptist Faith.   FUNERAL SERVICES: will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Reverend Brad Henson will officiate. VISITATION: will be held from noon until service time 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. In honor of his wishes, he will be cremated following the funeral service. For those who wish, memorials may be given to American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864.
