Ivan Inman Gibbs, 94, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 5:05 P.M. on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Lavender Ridge Dignified Memory Care in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Ivan was born on Saturday, June 21, 1919 in Hamilton County, Illinois the son of the late Giles Lewis Gibbs and Alma (Wright) Gibbs.  He married Lucille Webb on December 26, 1946 in McLeansboro, Illinois and she preceded him in death on August 1, 2003.  Surviving family members include 2 sons: Brett Gibbs and wife Nancy of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Greg Gibbs and wife Marji of Kell, Illinois; daughter: Diane Teague and husband George of Edmond, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren: Nathan Stortoen and wife Jean of Fort Worth, Texas, Kent Cummings and wife Joyce of Toronto, Canada, Matt Teague and wife Shaunna of Columbus, Georgia, Ian Gibbs and wife Jaime of Springfield, Illinois, Sara Mehta and husband Prashant of Chicago, Illinois, Curt Gibbs and wife Monica of Nashville, Tennessee, Carrie Gibbs and husband Cortez Hodges of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Scott Gibbs and wife Allie of Murray, Kentucky; sister: Katherine McRoy and husband Don of McLeansboro, Illinois; 2 brothers: Glenn Gibbs of Homer, Louisana and Dean Gibbs and wife Rosemary of Portage, Wisonsin; 9 great grandchildren; several nieces and nepehws also survive. His parents, wife, grandson: Paul Cummings and six brothers: Clyde, John Herman, Walter, Kenneth, Byford and Merril Gibbs preceded him in death.    Ivan was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, stationed at U.S. Naval Air Station in San Juan, Peurto Rico and Patuxent River, Maryland until being honorably discharged at Radioman Second Class. He began his teaching career in one room schools and later retired from teaching after 35 years. He was Superintendent for Rome School District when the school was built in the 1950's. He was Assistant Regional Superintendent in Jefferson County for 16 years. He planted a small tree farm on his property while planning his retirement and sold Christmas tress for 15 years. He was a Charter Member of First Community Church in Mt. Vernon and in more recent years, he attended First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.   FUNERAL SERVICES: will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Reverend Victor Long will officiate. VISITATION: will be held from 5 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. INTERMENT: Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The Chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct a Flag Presentation Service at the cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Angels on Assignment and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864.
