Southern Illinoisan July 18, 2014 Robert Phillips Sulcer June 9, 1928 - July 6, 2014 SESSER -- Robert Phillips Sulcer, 86, passed away July 6, 2014, of congestive heart failure. The son of the late Hazel Phillips Sulcer Shelton and the late James William Sulcer, Bob was raised in Sesser, to which he maintained a lifelong devotion. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees in education from SIU and served in the Air Force for several years before moving to South Florida in 1957, where for 33 years he was a highly respected elementary and middle school principal in the Broward County public school system. Bob was a beloved leader not only of students and faculty, but of his family and friends as well. Incomparably humble and fair, he exuded a rare integrity that spilled over to everyone he met. Bob's exuberance for life was unmistakable; not a day passed when he didn't find time to explore something new, discover and master a new technological gadget, read a favorite book, plan his next international cruise, or simply turn on some music and dance. For Bob, the glass was always full, no matter what came his way. He invariably calmed whomever was around him and rooted for your success -- especially if you were the underdog. And thanks to his unbelievable memory, he never forgot your face or your name. Above all, Bob prized his adored wife of 52 years, the late Jean Baker Sulcer; the children they raised, Jo Ann Sulcer of Roswell, Georgia, Carol Lynn Nau of Highland, California, and Robert P. Sulcer Jr. of New York City, who predeceased Bob in 2012. He was devoted to his precious granddaughters, Allison Nau-Hoeprich and Caitlin Nau of Phoenix, Arizona, and Caroline Miller of Roswell, Georgia. Bob is also survived by his loving brother, James Sulcer of Arvada, Colorado. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 19, in Plantation Presbyterian Church at 901 N.W. 70th Ave., in Plantation, Florida, with funeral services at noon.
