    3. Southern Illinoisan Newspaper September 12, 2014 BENTON -- Elvan Glendall "Glen" Bennett, 91, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, in Benton. He was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Jefferson County, the son of William and Pearl (Young) Bennett. He married Delores (Austin) in September 1946, and she survives. Mr. Bennett was a World War II U. S. Army Veteran. He was a recipient of three Bronze Stars awarded for Valor, along with many other military honors. He served in the South Pacific and drove the first truck off the carrier with General MacArthur when he returned to the Phillipines. Mr. Bennett was a career Farmer in both Ewing and Benton as well as working for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was the oldest living member of the East Benton Baptist Church. Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Delores Bennett of Benton; daughter, Glenda Bennett Woods of Marion; son, James Edward Bennett and wife, Connie of Maumelle, Arkansas; two granddaughters, Meredith Woods, and Stacey Bennett; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved canine companion, "Jackie." Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents; by a sister, Ielene Rea; and two brothers, Ivan and Lloyd. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with Dr. Bob Dickerson officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Benton American Legion and VFW Posts and the National Guard Honor Squad will be in the Shiloh Cemetery in Whittington.
