Harold J. "Red" Damron, age 85, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. “Red” served our country in the United States Air Force and later worked as the owner and operator of Damron Insurance. He was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge #31 AF&AM, the Jefferson County Shrine Club, and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1376. He coached Damron Insurance Girls Slowpitch Softball and St. Mary’s Girls Basketball taking them to first place. He was a founder and member of the Mount Vernon Township High School Sports Hall of Fame and also won the title of Jefferson County Senior Saint. Funeral Service for Red Damron will be held at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Gary Davenport and Joe Bob Pierce presiding. Visitation will be from 5:00 tp 8:00 P.M. Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Masonic Service will be held at 8:00 P.M. directly followed by a Shrine Walk-Through. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct Full Military Honors at the cemetery. Harold "Red" Damron is survived by his wife - Phyllis Damron of Mount Vernon, Illinois; his son - Steve Damron and wife Kay of Mount Vernon, Illinois; 3 daughters - Lisa Damron and best friend Lisa of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Carol Johnson and husband Don of Mount Vernon, Terry Newbury and husband Ron of Mount Vernon, Illinois; foster daughter - Belinda Kirgan and wife Diane of Woodlawn, Illinois; 11 grandchildren - Ryan, Donnie and wife Amy, Crystal and husband Matt, Amber and friend Brian, Bradon and fiancée Emily, Tara and friend Justin, Kyle, Clint, Brett, and Briley; 4 great grandchildren - Chase, Mason, Haydyn, and Jackson; 3 sisters - Linda Hutchens and husband Bob of Saint Louis, Missouri, Christine Nelms of Lola, Kentucky, Geneva Williams of Marion, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews also survive. Harold J. "Red" Damron was born on Wednesday, March 20, 1929 in Livingston County, Kentucky to Lonnie Damron and Eula Rector. He married Phyllis Grah on July 23, 1955 in Corinth, Mississippi. His parents, stepfather: Cletus Rector, two brothers: Billy Rector and Gene Damron, and one sister: Patsy O’Bryant preceded him in death.
