Burnett, 84, formerly of Benton, went to be with the Lord at 6:10 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014, from Good Samaritan Regional Health Center. Mr. Burnett was born Sept. 1, 1929, in Benton, the son of George M. and Elzie (Parmer) Burnett. He married Helen Cherkosky on Sept. 12, 1949, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2004. Mr. Burnett was a United States Air Force veteran. Bill was a member of the Benton Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites of Freemasonry, an Ainad Shriner. He retired from the Illinois Central Railroad as an engineer. Bill was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed working on his family genealogy. He is survived by her three daughters, Deborah Summers of Benton, Shelah Biggs-Korris of Mount Vernon, Julie Burnett of Valier; two sons, Jeff Burnett of Johnston City, and Scott Burnett and wife, Rhonda, of Orient; a daughter-in-law, Leona Burnett of Greshan, Oregon; a son-in-law, James Vessel of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren, Deidra Sanchez and husband, Aron of Benton, Brett Burnett and fiancée, Melissa Borders of West Frankfort, Kacie Fitzjerrells and husband, Jeremy, of Mount Vernon, Cheyenne Pickel and husband, Derrick, and Shannon Burnett, both of Greshan, Oregon, Brooke Burnett of Johnston City, Taylor and Cassie Vessel, both of Valier, and Mack Korris of Mt. Vernon; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Lee and Ace Burnett, Macy, Dayton and Sieger Sanchez, Ethan Fitzjerrells, Ava Pickel, Landon Senthen, Brooke Beers and Layton Beers; brothers and sisters, Carol Stark, Jim Burnett, Shirley Snow and husband, Cletus, Leonard Burnett and wife, Naomi, Bob Burnett and wife, Pam, and Donna Burnett; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Burnett was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Bill G. Burnett II; parents; and many brothers and sisters. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory in Benton. Burial will be in Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery.
