From another source I learned that his mother is Lucy Ann Carter who died after giving birth to him. He has half siblings from Lucy Ann's marriage to James Creel. His father was Joseph I. Gray. Joseph had a younger brother James Martin Gray that lived in Ashley, IL and relocated to Maroa, IL where he is buried. My great grandfather is on the census living in Maroa, IL in 1910. He married Clara Elizabeth Pitchford. She lived in Ashley with her widowed mother, Eliza Angeline Holt Pitchford. My grandmother, Helen Maime Gray was born in Ashley. I believe John Carter must have followed his uncle to Maroa. I cannot find information on him between 1887 and 1910 except through another private tree. That member has contacted me but she shows his name as John Kendall Gray. I believe this is an error. I do not have a death certificate or birth certificate. Nor a marriage certificate. I would guess he married in Ashley but he doesn't show on any census in Ashley. Another mystery is that Clara Elizabeth Pitchford had a sister, Minnie. Minnie married an Robert Henry Woodrome. An R. H. Woodrome and John C. Gray share a cemetery plot in Ashley. My great grandfather is buried in Decatur. My uncle, John E. Blankenburg has photos that I hope to see when I visit Florida. He said that one woman looks like a native American. I can't find anyone that appears to be native American by name. Thank you again for contacting me and for any information you can share!
