The Mt. Vernon Register-News, Monday, December 5, 1966 Harry L. Bates, 88, Dies; Former Car Co. Official Harry Lee Bates, chief time clerk at the old Mt. Vernon car shops for many years, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital, where he had been a patient for one day. Mr. Bates, who had been residing at Hickory Grove Manor Nursing Home, was 88 years, one month and 23 days of age. One of the best known car company officials over the years, he was Past Master of Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 31 and Past High Priest of Andrew D. Webb Chapter 160, Royal Arch Masons. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the First Methodist church, of which he was a member. Dr. Don Crocker will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Friends may call at Myers Chapel after 4:00 p.m. today. Masonic services will be conducted at the chapel at 7:00 o'clock this evening. At noon Tuesday the body will be moved to the church, to lie in state until the funeral hour. Mr. Bates was born October 10, 1878 at Neponset, Ill., the son of Samuel H. and Fannie (Handsaker) Bates. He was married, in Mt. Vernon, to Blanche Bryant, who preceded him in death July 24, 1965. He is survived by one son, Bryan L. Bates of Newport, Oregon; one sister, Effie Smith of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Shurtz.
