The Register-News, Mt. Vernon, IL Posted: Tuesday, August 26, 2014 6:14 am Charles Melvin Lucas, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon. He was born June 23, 1924, in Avelia, Pa., the son of Vernon Robert and Mary Viola (McDonald) Lucas. He married Dolores Irene Page on Dec. 16, 1945, at the Ft. Richardson Base Chapel in Anchorage, Alaska. He is survived by his wife Dolores of Mt. Vernon; three sons, Larry Lucas and wife Brenda of Roanoke, Va., Jim Lucas and wife Nancy of Shady Valley, Tenn. and Dan Lucas and wife Sherri of Mt. Vernon; four grandsons, Timothy Lucas and wife Allison, Todd Lucas and wife Samantha, Tyler Lucas and Steven Lucas; granddaughter, Crystal Ann Lucas; brother, Ralph Lucas of Wheeling, W. Va.; brother-in-law, Mike Page of Mt. Vernon; two sisters-in-law, Gail Bonham of California and Eva Lucas of Wellsburg, W. Va.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents. Charles served with the Alaskan Command Medical Corps during World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands and in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a valued employee at the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, Brehm Hanna Chevrolet Company and was in vending sales until retirement. He was an active member for many years at Evangelical United Brethren Church, was a former member of Turner Roehm AMVETS Post 4, Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141, Mount Vernon Elks (B.P.O.E.) Lodge 819 and the Green Hills Country Club. He was also affectionately known as "Pancake Charlie" by his fellow regular diners at The Hitching Post Restaurant due to his love of breakfast and morning ritual of enjoying one pancake and a cup of coffee, and he was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan. A celebration of life service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Randy Sells officiating. In honor of his wishes, he was cremated and the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Mt.
