Charles Richard "Dick" McKenzie, 66, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 5:08 P.M. on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. McKenzie was born on Thursday, June 1, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri the son of the late Tony Marion and Anna Mae (Whitman) McKenzie. He married Sunday Hayes on September 20, 1979 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Surviving family members include his stepmother: Gwen McKenzie of Indiana; wife: Sunday McKenzie of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 4 daughters: Kathleen Soderlund and husband Stephen of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Theresa Saenz and friend Tom of Gatesville, Texas, Julie McKenzie of Mountain Home, Arkansas and Monica McKenzie of Texas; stepdaughter: Tressa Porter and husband Chad of Woodlawn, Illinois; stepson: Josh Mays and friend Misha of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 3 sisters: Joyce McVay and husband Danny of Belleville, Illinois, Sharon Radich of Plainfield, Illinois and Karen Kluck and husband Ted of Indiana; brother: Tony "Sonny" McKenzie and wife Sondra "Patches" of Marion, Illinois; 17 grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive. His parents, one sister: Myrtle "Mryt" Collins and one nephew preceded him in death. Dick served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman Third Class aboard the USS Shenandoah (AD-26) and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, was a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141 and the Mt. Vernon Gun & Sportsman Club. VISITATION: will be held from 5 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. GRAVESIDE SERVICES: will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Smith Veterans Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. Reverend Frank Houston will officiate. INTERMENT: Smith Veterans Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct Full Military Honors at the cemetery.
