MT. VERNON - Ronald Dean Sutherland, 71, of Iuka, passed away at 8:22 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, at his home. He was born on Aug. 23, 1939, in Romine Township, the son of William Glen and Sarah Matilda (Pennington) Sutherland. On May 14, 1960, at the Wamac Baptist Church he married Ruth Irene Quarterman and she survives in Iuka. Mr. Sutherland was a foreman for Valley Steel at their Irvington plant for 17 years. He was a member of Local 798 Pipefitters Union of Tulsa, Okla. He laid the first pipe at Prudhoe Bay while working for the Trans Alaskan Pipeline from 1975 to 1977. He worked for Key Drilling Company as their driller for several years and later worked for Rockwell in Centralia which later became Cambridge Industries where he retired in 1999. He was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Centralia and he served in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Sutherland was an avid hunter, fisherman and arrowhead hunter and collector and was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan. In addition to his wife, Ruth Irene Sutherland, he is survived by three daughters, Cindy Lee Wooters of Centralia, Lisa Ann Faust and husband Mark of Dix and Leigh Ann Davis and husband Matt of Salem; eight grandchildren, Lynn Ann Clement and husband Tony of Hannibal, Mo., Matt Wooters of Centralia, Melissa Wooters and fiancée Daryn Corruthers of Shiloh, Jennifer Keller of Centralia, Ashley Dennis of Centralia, Lacie Baugh and special friend J.D. Whiting of Dix, Chelsea Crouch of Salem and Matthew Davis of Salem; and two sisters, Janet Byford of Olney and Norma Curtis of Centralia. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Jasper and Bessie Pennington; and his father- and mother-in-law, William (Bill) and Geneva Quarterman. Mr. Sutherland's funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m., at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix with Pastor Jonathan Urshan officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Grove (County Line) Cemetery.
