MT. VERNON - Eddie R. Smith, 68, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at his residence in Mt. Vernon. He was born on Dec. 28, 1942, in Jefferson County, a son of Marion L. Smith and Media A. Fields. He married Patricia Williamson on Dec. 31, 1965, in Mt. Vernon and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1997. A flag presentation service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Chaplain Ernie Collins officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Eddie is survived by a daughter, Tera R. McAdoo and husband Quint of Mt. Vernon; a son, Bryan Smith of Evansville, Ind.; two grandchildren, Josh Bauer and Cory McAdoo, both of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Mary Jo Hanes and husband Mike of Carbondale; three nieces, Cindi Cox of Orlando, Fla., Mary Inez Hill of Fairfield and Lisa Breithaupt and husband Jason of Waterloo; a nephew, Robbie Hill and wife Cheryl of Alton; and a close family friend, Julie Goree of Mt. Vernon. His parents, his wife, his brother, Maxey Smith, and two sisters, Vivian Pauline Cox and Inez Hill preceded him in death. Eddie worked as a jobsite foremand for J.K. Trotter Construction Company for 20 years and was a self-employed concrete finisher. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was the commander of the Young Marines for over 10 years, was chairman of the Young Marines Ball for several years, was a member of Turner Roehm AMVETS Post 4, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1376, the American Legion, Elks Mt. Vernon Lodge #755 (L.O.O.M.) and the Mt. Vernon Gun and Sportsman Club.
