MT. VERNON - Verla C. Boles Shepherd, 97, of Mt. Vernon died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 15, 2011, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born May 4, 1913, in Dale, the daughter of Elza and Dolly (Reed) Satterfield. She was first married to Wm. Arlin Boles. She then married George Russell Shepherd. Mrs. Shepherd was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies Aide at Faith Lutheran. Mrs. Shepherd is survived by three children, Helen Nadine Tedford of Troy, Gary Howard Boles and wife Dorothy of Ina and Larry David Boles and wife Patricia of Mt. Vernon; 10 grandchildren, Dale Tedford of Granite City, Jim Tedford and wife Robin of Troy, Gary Everett Tedford and wife Joy of Edwardsville, Carol Wooliver of Troy, Linda Sue and husband Keith Rickman of Nashville, Diane and husband Matt Galli of Rosco, Stephen Boles and wife Sherry of Carbondale, Terry Boles and wife Heather of Mt. Vernon, J. Arlin Boles and wife Emily of Niantic and Tammy Sartor and husband Adam of Benton; 16 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Cletus Satterfield and wife Betty of Mt. Vernon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a son-in-law, Frank Tedford; a grandson, Terry Tedford and wife Sandy; two great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Vivian Leah Pearson and Evelyn Ruth Satterfield; and a brother, Clyde Reed Satterfield. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Josepha Lecke officiating and special reading by Jon Green. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon and on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.
