- Margaret Amanda Fox, 84, of Mt. Vernon, died at 1:35 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2011, at Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon. She was born on Dec. 3, 1926, in Quincy, the daughter of Edsel and Maymie (Simpkin) Miller. She married James M. Fox on June 24, 1949, in Urbana. Mrs. Fox is survived by two daughters, Jane Davis and husband Kevin of Mt. Vernon and Alice Martin and husband Steve of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren, Amanda (Davis) Montgomery and husband Perry, Nathaniel Davis, Beth (Martin) Pense and husband Jason, Andrea (Martin) Adams and husband Seth, and Daniel Martin; four great-grandchildren, Maya and Aleeyah Montgomery and Trevor and Audrey Pense; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband; one son, Michael M. Fox; her parents; and two brothers, Richard and Robert Miller, preceded her in death. Mrs. Fox was raised on a farm in Timewell where she rode a pony to a one-room schoolhouse at which she later taught. She was a graduate of the University of Illinois and taught several years in the Springfield area before becoming a full-time homemaker. She was active in Methodist churches her entire life until failing health. Mrs. Fox was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon since 1968. She traveled to several countries with her husband and they enjoyed many cruises. At her request, there will be no local visitation. A memorial service will be held in Clayton at a later date.
