    3. MT. VERNON - Harold W. Hussong, Jr., died April 1, 2011, at his home at Winchester after a long illness. He was born Oct. 10, 1921, in Jefferson, Kan. to Edna Louella (Moore) and Harold W. Hussong, Sr. Harold graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1940 and married Mary Ann Owen on Feb. 12, 1944, in Mt. Vernon. They recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Jeanne (Charles Craver) of Winchester; a son, William (Linda Kwiatek) of Frontenac, Mo.; a brother, L. Dale Hussong (Tillie) of Florissant, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Wilt; and a sister and brother who died in infancy. Harold served three years in the U.S. Army 79th Division MPs in World War II, including two trips to Africa to bring prisoners of war to the U.S. He landed on D-Day in Normandy, doing traffic control on the beaches, then through France and Germany. Harold loved woodworking and loved to sing as a member of the Champaign-Urbana Barbershoppers chorus and several quartets, and also as a soloist and choir member of First Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon and Faith Methodist Church in Champaign. He was an avid fisherman in northern U.S. lakes and those in Illinois. He also enjoyed athletics and served as a supervisor of ushers for sporting events at the University of Illinois for many years. Harold worked as a sheet metal worker in Mt. Vernon and Champaign. No visitation is scheduled. Private family burial services will be held at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Mt. Vernon on Thursday.
