MT. VERNON - Maxine Roach Sledge will be celebrating her 85th birthday on April 8, 2011. She was born in Cloverdale, Kan., in 1926, to Roy and Lydia Roach. Growing up on a farm in Cedar Vale, Kan., she was raised with three sisters, Virginia William-son, Louise Myers and Wanda Cowell, both deceased. She attended Cedar Vale High School, class of 1942. She was a substitute teacher at Summit School and Shiloh School. She married Wesley Loman Sledge, son of Wesley Everett Sledge, of Bluford. Loman and Maxine settled in Wichita, Kan., after World War II, and later, Derby, Kan., where she presently lives. Over the years, they took many trips back to Illinois to see family and friends. After his death in 1992, she still remains in contact with many of his family members. She was a homemaker, a member of First Christian Church and a Girl Scout leader. Maxine enjoys her flowers, taking care of her cats, chatting on the phone with friends, receiving letters from loved ones and pictures of her great-grandchildren. She has a son, Ronald (wife Ruth) of Tuscon, Ariz., and daughter Sharon (husband Stan) McAhren of Byers, Kan. There are six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with two on the way. Does anyone know if her husband was the son of Wesley Everett Sledge (1892-1972) and Elsie Leathers (1901-1980) ?? It doesn't mention him being a "Jr." but seems like he might be.
