Opal E. Clemens age 85, of Mt. Vernon passed away 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011 at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Opal was born the daughter of Carrie Edith (Stevens) and Newton Boykin on May 10, 1925. She was raised by her mother Carrie and stepfather , Hughey Crowder. She was united in marriage to Marvin H. Clemens on December 23, 1945 in Mt. Vernon; He survives in Mt. Vernon. She had worked several places in Mt. Vernon including the International Shoe Company. Opal was a member of the Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Opal also served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts. She is survived by her husband, Marvin Clemens of Mt. Vernon; son, Steven Clemens and wife Sandra of St. Genevieve Missouri; four grandchildren, Mike Clemens and wife Trina of Mt. Vernon, Kari and husband Justin Joseph of Toledo, Ohio, Mark Douglas Clemens and wife Becky and Kassie Ray Clemens both of St. Genevieve, Missouri; two step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren, Jessica, Madison, Tyler, Kaden and Steven; step-sister Merle Greene of Mt. Vernon; half brother Glen Robert Boykin of West Virginia; step sister Colleen Zinke of Mendota, Illinois; and also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Eva Logan and husband Bob. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2011 at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Jimmy Bledsoe officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 11a.m.until service time at the funeral home.
