MT. VERNON - Lola Belle Phillips, 89, of Salem, died March 1, 2011, at Doctors Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem. Born Nov. 17, 1921, in Benton, she was the daughter of Ed and Mae Easley Shelton who preceded her in death. She was a wife, homemaker and shared in her husband's ministry for 50 years. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Salem and active in the Ladies Jolly Workers Organization. She loved baby-sitting her grandchildren, cooking for her large family and tending her flowers and large garden. Her family remembers her as a strong woman of faith and prayer. She married Frederick "Ray" Phillips on May 7, 1938, in Salem, and he preceded her in death on June 27, 2010. Survivors include her sons, Don Phillips and wife Ruth Ann of W. Terre Haute, Ind., Gary Phillips and wife Kathy of Mt. Vernon and Phil Phillips and wife Shelly of St. Peter; her daughters, Donna Stevens and husband John of Martinsville, Judy Milner and husband Bill of Salem, Linda Miselbrook and husband Gary of Kinmundy and Kathy Perkins and husband Ken of Waterloo; a sister, Louise Malone and husband Clyde of Alma; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Shelton; a sister, Doris Moffitt; and great-grandchildren Daniel Burton and Blake Mercer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First General Baptist Church in Salem with the Rev. Doug Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethlehem Church Cemetery in Salem. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Rankin Funeral Home in Salem and from 10 a.m. until service time at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made to the Union Grove Youth Camp or the Bethlehem Cemetery and will be accepted by the Rankin Funeral Home in Salem.
