"Jerk" Newcomb, 83, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, in Helia Healthcare in Benton. He was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Ewing, the son of Steve and Ortis (Page) Newcomb. Mr. Newcomb married Rudell (Short) Smith on Oct. 25, 1950, and she survives. He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Newcomb was retired from AMAX Coal Company. He is survived by his wife, Rudell (Short) Newcomb of Benton; children, Patti Gilbreath and husband, Bill, of Benton, and Mike Newcomb and wife, Kathy of West Frankfort; two grandchildren, Shawn Yadloski and wife, Shauna of Vienna, and Trisha Flechter and husband, Adam, of Sesser; two great-grandchildren, Gracelyn Yadloski and BreeAnna Fletcher; and brother, Ronald Newcomb of Ewing. Mr. Newcomb was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, in Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Mark Minor officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
