MT. VERNON - Donald E. Sargent, 76, died Thursday, June 9, 2011, in New Whiteland, Ind. He was a resident of New Whiteland, Ind., and Mt. Vernon. Donald was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Mt. Vernon. to Pearl and Lucille (Cooper) Sargent. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran. He married Shirley A. Tate on May 28, 1957, in Indianapolis; they were married for 54 years. He was employed with the federal government as an electronics technician at Naval Avionics Center for over 25 years, retiring in 1996. Donald enjoyed woodworking, carpentry and repairing any electronic device. He loved air shows and local stock car racing. Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Sargent of New Whiteland, Ind.; three children, Michael (Tammy) Sargent and Mark (Cathy) Sargent, both of Greenwood, Ind., and Greg (Kim) Sargent of Mt.Vernon; one step-brother, James Alexander of Evansville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Josh List, Olivia Davis, Cory, Jon-Michael, Luke, Jacob Sargent; and three great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jocelynn List and Rece Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents. A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. Hwy 31 North, Whiteland, Ind. Friends and family may call from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home. A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Mt. Vernon.
