========================== Russell Birkhead 1931-2011 Daily Review Atlas, Monmouth, IL Posted Jan 14, 2011 GALESBURG - Russell L. Birkhead, 79, of Monmouth, died 3:31 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg. He was born March 23, 1931 in Green Township, Mercer County, the son of William and Ida (Olomon) Birkhead. He was raised and educated in Viola and graduated from Viola High School in 1949. He attended Eureka College. Birkhead married Alta Jean Potts at Eureka Oct. 28, 1951. She survives. He was in management of manufacturing most of his working life. He owned and operated Culligan Water Conditioning from 1978 until retiring in 1998. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Monmouth Kiwanis Club, Viola Masonic Lodge 577 and the Scottish Rite Chapter of Moline. He is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter, Lisa (Danny) Mettler of Monmouth; four grandchildren, Robbie Hiett, Heather Hiett, Allison Hiett and Eric Hiett; one sister, Dorothy Birkhead of Viola; one brother, Roger (Rachel) Birkhead of Viola; one sister-in-law, Bonnie Birkhead of East Moline; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Gladys Birkhead; and two brothers, Lester Birkhead and Ed Birkhead. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, with Bill Deisher officiating. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery. Friends may call Monday, Jan. 17 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, where his family will be present from 5-7 p.m. A Masonic service will begin at 7 p.m. Memorials may be left to the Monmouth Kiwanis Club or Jamieson Center.
