Sat Jan 15, 2011, 09:00 AM CST MT. VERNON - Gordon Windings Sr., age 71, of Villa Ridge, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Gordon was born Sept. 9, 1939, at Villa Ridge, the son of the late James L. Windings and Lorene (Edwards) Windings. Gordon was an active member of the American Legion Post 178 of Villa Ridge and a lifetime member of the Cairo VFW Post 2649. He served his country in the Vietnam War and retired of 22 years from the State of Illinois Department of Unemployment Security. He also retired after 22 years from the Air Force receiving the following medals: Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He played USA softball in Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gordon married the former Sherry Russell on Dec. 27, 1959. Survivors include his wife, Sherry Windings, Villa Ridge; two sons, Gordon Jr. (Jane) Windings, McLeansboro and David (Ruth) Windings, Villa Ridge; a daughter, Deborah Flota (Fiancée Shannon A. McNeil), Mt. Vernon; three brothers, James "Jim" (Pansy) Windings, Grand Chain, Robert "Bob" (Nancy) Windings, Mounds and Carl E. "Pete" (Mary Ellen) Windings, Villa Ridge; nine grandchildren, Brian (Tammy) Throckmorton, James Windings, Danny (Leah) Windings, Tarah Newhart, Tessa (David) Binversie, David Jr. (Brook) Windings, Aaron (Andrea) Windings, Summer Hubson and Melia Straton; seven great-grandchildren, Alaina, Cassie, Jada, Evan, Joshua, Tyler and McKenzie; brother-in-laws Earl Russell Jr., Villa Ridge, James Russell, Harrisburg, and Bradley (Lori) Russell, Paris, Tenn.; and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Jones Funeral Home, Villa Ridge, with his nephew, the Rev. John Windings, officiating. Interment will follow in the Mound City National Cemetery, Mound City, with full military honors given by the Illinois National Guard Detail Honors and area veterans. Friends may call Monday between 5 and 8 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home, Villa Ridge. Jones Funeral Home, Villa Ridge, is in charge of the arrangements.
