Looking at census records, I found Robert's father William in 1930 census for Mt. Vernon Twp, but no wife in the home and only son Leslie living with him along with William's brother and wife. I found his mother Ada listed as housekeeper in the home of George Becker in Cahokia, Centerville Twp, St. Clair Co, IL with her two youngest children, Rena and Robert listed as "borders". Ada states she is divorced. By 1940 census William and 2nd wife Ella are living in Webber Twp with all 3 children. Here is the obit for William's 2nd wife. The children are actually her step-children. Mrs. Ella Virginia MILLER of RFD 3, wife of William L. MILLER, died at 3:30 a.m. today of heart trouble. Her age was 47 years, 4 months and 26 days. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Clyde WADDELL, will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Myers Chapel. Burial will be in West Salem Cemetery. From another source I learned that his mother is Lucy Ann Carter who died after giving birth to him. He has half siblings from Lucy Ann's marriage to James Creel. His father was Joseph I. Gray. Joseph had a younger brother James Martin Gray that lived in Ashley, IL and relocated to Maroa, IL where he is buried. My great grandfather is on the census living in Maroa, IL in 1910. He married Clara Elizabeth Pitchford. She lived in Ashley with her widowed mother, Eliza Angeline Holt Pitchford. My grandmother, Helen Maime Gray was born in Ashley. I believe John Carter must have followed his uncle to Maroa. I cannot find information on him between 1887 and 1910 except through another private tree. That member has contacted me but she shows his name as John Kendall Gray. I believe this is an error. I do not have a death certificate or birth certificate. Nor a marriage certificate. I would guess he married in Ashley but he doesn't show on any census in Ashley. Another mystery is that Clara Elizabeth Pitchford had a sister, Minnie. Minnie married an Robert Henry Woodrome. An R. H. Woodrome and John C. Gray share a cemetery plot in Ashley. My great grandfather is buried in Decatur. My uncle, John E. Blankenburg has photos that I hope to see when I visit Florida. He said that one woman looks like a native American. I can't find anyone that appears to be native American by name. Thank you again for contacting me and for any information you can share! Co. Birth Records Books but his birth wasn't listed. I believe registration wasn't required by law until 1916. I checked Delayed Birth Records and he wasn't listed there either. I know his WW1 Draft Registion shows he was born in Jefferson Co., Ill. Have you tried obtaining his marriage certificate to see if parents are listed or his death certificate and obit.? Do you know the names of any of his sibblings? I believe his parents might have been Joseph I. and Lucy Ann Carter?? I've found two marriages in my books with parents names for both of Joseph's two marriages. I believe his widow (second marriage) is shown in the 1900 census along with several children but John Carter Gray is not listed with the family. I have info. on this family if you need it. I have a ton of Jefferson Co. genealogy books and would be happy to go thru them if you can give me any other leads or info. or if you want me to search for other lines.
