    3. John E. Roosevelt 87-year-old former Albion resident, John E. Roosevelt of Carbondale, IL, died Wednesday, December 1, at Century Assisted Living in Carbondale. He worked in manufacturing at Pacific Press in Mt. Carmel, IL and farmed. He was also a World War II Navy Veteran. Surviving are his wife Mary Anna Roosevelt of Albion; one son, John M. Roosevelt of Carbondale, IL; two daughters, Deidre Roosevelt of Portland, OR and Bonnie Tickner of Mt. Vernon, IL; three brothers, Darrell of Albion, Don of West Salem and Paul of Commerce, TX; one sister, Evelyn Boewe of West Salem; and four grandchildren. Funeral services for John E. Roosevelt will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 5, at Nale's Funeral Home in Albion. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon Sunday, December 5, until the time of service at Nale's Funeral Home in Albion.

    3. MT. VERNON - Juanita M. Sweetin, 87, of Ina, went home to be with the Lord and join her husband on Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, 2010. She was born in Elk Prairie Township, Jefferson County, on Dec. 27, 1922, the daughter of Lee and Lucy (Osborn) Watts. She married Haden Sweetin on Jan. 18, 1941; and he preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1992. Mrs. Sweetin attended Elk Prairie Christian Church. Mrs. Sweetin is survived by her children, Sue Heard and husband Bryce of Ina, Pat Peterson of Mt. Vernon and Donnie Sweetin of Ina; nine grandchildren, Rhonda Rone of Sandoval, Becky Luffman and husband Mark of Carmi, Kim Marvel of Ewing, C. Dale Houseworth and wife Kim of Benton, James Peterson and wife Knova of Mt. Vernon, Dawnita Gibson of Indianapolis, Caleesha Peterson of Mt. Vernon, Krista Bradshaw and husband Ryan of Mt. Vernon, Brooke Webb and husband Caleb of Christopher; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard Watts and wife Mildred of Ina, John Watts of Ina, Dick Watts of Ina; and a sister-in-law, Lila Watts of Ina. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Ronald "Bub" Sweetin; a great-grandson, Daniel Marvel; two brothers, Bill Watts and Bob Watts; and by three sisters, Betty Blood, Margie Reynolds and Martha Frazier. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Johnston Funeral Home in Ina with Brother David Shores officiating. Burial will be in the Kirk Cemetery in Ina.     3. Leola "Fern" Hunt, 88 of Fostoria, passed away 8:13 am Wednesday morning, December 1, 2010 at Independence House, Fostoria. Fern was born March 9, 1922 in Wayne County, Illinois to the late John and Rose (Moore) Robertson. She married Gerald McQueen and he is deceased, she then married Fred E. Hunt and he also preceded her in death. Surviving is a son, Kevin E. (Margaret) Hunt, Fostoria; daughter, Pamela Hunt-Rash, Port Charlotte, FL.; a step daughter, Mary Alice Vogel, Toledo; four grandchildren, Nathan, Andrew and Jason Hunt and Angela Hahn; and a step grandson, Michael Bostic. She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry McQueen; daughter, Shirley McQueen; granddaughter, Lori Ann Hunt; grandson, Chad M. Hunt; and ten brothers and sisters; son in law, Jim Rash. Fern had been a waitress at Hunt's Restaurant in Mount Vernon, Ill., and also at Lehman's Lodge, Fostoria. She had been a member of the Fostoria Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. Visitation is Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 pm at MANN-HARE-HOENING FUNERAL HOME 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday December 7, 2010 at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The family receive friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until service time at the Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.     3. Arvel Owen Burgess, 92, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 3:33 A.M. on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at White Oak Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He was born on Tuesday, January 29, 1918 in Wayne County, Illinois the son of the late Tom and Lizzie (Coil) Burgess. He married Reba P. Keen on April 15, 1938 in Henderson, Kentucky and she preceded him in death on January 23, 2005. Surviving family members include his 2 daughters: Shirley LaVielle of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Beverly Gaines and husband Jim of Opdyke, Illinois; 5 grandchildren: Michelle Stevens and husband Will of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Stephanie Morgan and husband Eric of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Eric Gaines and wife Amanda of Opdyke, Illinois, Steven Fox and wife Janine of Laguna Niguel, California and Suzette Clark of Laguna Niguel, California; 11 great grandchildren: Jordan, Sydney, Adam, Makena, Kyle, Trevor, Devon, Collin, Cooper, Kage and Emerson; special friend: Florence Casey of Mt.     3. MT. VERNON - Ida May Crothers, 87, passed away Friday, Nov. 26, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt Vernon. She was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Rosedale, Kan. Her family moved to Chicago, where she lived until she retired and moved to Myrtle, Mo. She enjoyed gardening and volunteering for the senior citizen center; eventually settling in Mt Vernon to be near her son and his family. Ida is survived by two children, Norma Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Hank Holz and wife Caryl of Mt Vernon; seven grandchildren, Lynette Huberty, Bobby Pierce, Cheryl Pierce, Dawn Shontz, Tommy Smith, Heather Wilson and Sara Bernard; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five stepchildren, Leonard Crothers, Marianne Trenhaile, James Crothers, Connie Nuttle and Lynn Crawford; 22 stepgrandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and her neighbor and best friend, Cleo Pigg. Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Crothers, and her daughter, Mary Meuret. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev.     3. CENTRALIA - Joseph Lewis Currie, 72, formerly of Centralia, passed away at his home on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, in Joliet. He was born on Jan. 27, 1938, in Centralia, the son of Samuel and Luvenia (Thorpe) Currie. He married Jenell Settles on March 27, in Marion and later divorced. Mr. Currie is survived by his children, Josephine (Tracy) Keeler of Centralia, Jacqueline Pickney of St. Paul, Minn., Jennifer (Michael) Green of Mississippi, Joseph Currie Jr. and Benjamin Currie, both of Joliet, Martin Wesley of Dallas; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helena Matthews of Centralia; a sister-in-law, Dimple Currie of Centralia; a brother-in-law, Morris Matthews Sr. of Eagan, Minn.; stepsons James (Lydia) Jennings of Mt. Vernon and Michael Currie of Greenville; stepdaughters Mary (Michael) Meyer, Dorothy Jones, Francine McKinney and former wife and friend Jenell Currie all of Mt. Vernon; loving companion Earnestine Travis and her granddaughter L'reyana Bew, both of Joliet; best friend of many years, R.L. Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Robert "Robbie" Currie and Joshua Currie; brothers Richard, Samuel Jr., Glenzo, William David and Rollins Currie; sisters Joyce, Amanda Washington, Shirley Barnes and Luvenia Flagg; grandsons Briston Currie, Albert Jones Jr., Rodrick Currie; stepson Charles Jennings Jr.; and stepdaughter Warnette (Jennings) McGee. Mr. Currie was employed at Lee's Drug Store on Dec. 11, 1963, in Centralia. He enlisted in the Army Reserve, serving his country for nine years. After leaving the Reserve, he moved to Joliet, where he worked at the Stateville Prison. He retired from there in 1997. He attended Lincoln Elementary Grade School in Centralia and was a graduate of Centralia High School, where he played basketball. Mr. Currie had a passion for helping others and gave of himself freely whenever there was a need, whether it was helping at the church or fixing up houses. He loved spending quality time with his sister and brother. He and his brother were inseparable. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church in Centralia with the Rev. Val J. Powe officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by the Veterans Post 2055 and American Legion Post 446. Friends may call after 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church. Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements

    3. Bobbie Owen Hicks, 75, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 3:30 P.M. on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Mr. Hicks was born on Saturday, June 22, 1935 in Jefferson County, Illinois the son of the late Owen and Helen (Dulany) Allan Hicks. He married Arlene M. Nichols on September 12, 1954 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Surviving family members include his wife: Arlene Hicks of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; daughter: Debbie Reynolds and husband Steve of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 5 grandchildren: Travis Hertenstein and wife April of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Colin Hertenstein of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Casey Hertenstein of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Matthew Reynolds and wife Zane of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Brittany Reynolds of Mt.     3. Theodore R. Scott, Jr., of Deerfield, passed away on November 13, 2010. Ted was born in Mt. Vernon on December 7, 1924, where he became the town tennis, ping-pong and billiards champion and valedictorian of his high school class. He served his country in World War II, joining the 15th Army Air Corps (461st Bomb Group) as a B-24 navigator, becoming a lieutenant at age 19. On his 21st mission, he and his crew were shot down over West Hungary. Ted was a prisoner of war in Germany for 89 days until he was liberated at the end of the war in Europe. Ted graduated Phi Betta Kappa and earned his juris doctor degree from the University of Illinois. He served as a law clerk to Judge Walter C. Lindley of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He became an intellectual property litigator, spending the majority of his career as named partner in the law firm of McDougall, Hersh & Scott in Chicago, which later merged with Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. Ted remained of counsel to Jones Day until 1998. In a notable case, American Thermos Products Company v. Aladdin Industries, Inc., Ted successfully argued the term "thermos" was not subject to trademark rights, and was instead a generic description of a vacuum insulated container. Ted was a fellow to the American College of Trial Lawyers, past president of the Patent Law Association of Chicago and past president of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Bar Association. He was a member of the Union League Club of Chicago and Exmoor Country Club of Highland Park. Ted was a lifelong Cubs fan, despite growing up in Cardinals country. He was an avid Abraham Lincoln and Civil War buff. Many jazz musicians called him friend. He was an ardent traveler, whether it would be to World War II sites, family gatherings or peewee football games. Ted will be greatly missed and dearly remembered by his wife Ariel O'Hara; his children Anne (Daniel) Laurence, Sarah (Robert) Buckland, Daniel Scott and Barbara (Richard) Gomon; his grandchildren Scott Buckland, Alison Laurence, Corey and Michael Gomon and Kaitlyn Scott; four step-children; seventeen step-grandchildren; and his feline friend Ozzie.     3. \\\Delmar A. Hicks, 82, passed away at 6:38 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Delmar had been a truck driver for Owens Transfer in Du Quoin. He was a member of Old Du Quoin Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Delmar was also a member of Teamsters Union. He was born July 16, 1928, in Scheller, the son of Archie and Beulah (Fred) Hicks. He married Marilyn Glover on Aug. 24, 1946, in Pinckneyville, and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Tamaroa; one son, Kevin Hicks and wife, Julie, of Elkville; four grandchildren, Travis Hicks and wife, Ruth, of Vergennes, Nichole Holder and Brian Tripp of Hallidayboro, Samantha Hicks and Jacob Hicks, both of Elkville; two great-grandchildren, Madysen Hicks of Vergennes and Karsen Holder of Hallidayboro; one brother, Ronald Hicks of Scheller; three sisters, Norma Gilbert of Christopher, Janet Kesler of Christopher and Karen Winget of Scheller; sister-in-law, Betty Hicks of Steeleville; and several nieces and nephews. Irv was born on Tuesday, November 28, 1922 in Mapleton, Iowa the son of the late Winfield and Lorena (Kragel) Nathlich. He married Margaret Davidson on November 5, 1944 in Brooklyn, Iowa. Surviving family members include his wife: Margaret Nathlich of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; son: Donald Nathlich and wife Laura of San Ramon, California; daughter: Linda Garlinghouse and husband Michael of Murphysboro, Illinois; 6 grandchildren: Michelle Reische and wife Tony of Mount Sterling, Illinois, Steve Garlinghouse and wife Rachel of Collinsville, Illinois, Chris Nathlich and wife Linzy of Reston, Virginia, Emily Nathlich of Arlington, Virginia, Mark Nathlich and Amy Nathlich of San Ramon, California; 4 great grandchildren: Dalton and Dylan Reische of Mount Sterling, Illinois, Andriella Garlinghouse of Collinsville, Illinois and Abigail Nathlich of Reston, Virginia; sister: Marceil Frydenlund of Soldier, Iowa; several nieces and nephews also survive.
