MT. VERNON - Celestnia Simmons, age 103, of Kell, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Odin Health Care Center. She was born July 16, 1907, in Exchange, the daughter of Sanford C. and Martha L. (Gordon) Hill. She married Roy Simmons on Jan. 12, 1939, in St. Louis, and he preceded her in death. Celestnia was a lifelong resident of Kell where she and Roy made their home. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Simmons is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Hutton and husband Gerald of Kell; a son, Howard Simmons and wife Joy of Mill Creek, Ind.; and five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren, one step great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Gordon Hill; three sisters, Lourania Stanford, Iola Hawkins and Emma Spangler; and an infant sister. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Donoho Prairie Christian Church near Kell with Wayne Tate officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at L.R. The groom is the son of Don and Dena Jones of Salem. Matron of honor was Shana Gerberding, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Chelsey Duncan and Shannon Bruce, friends of the bride. The groom is a May 2009 graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. Betty Joan (Pursell) Presswood age 77 of Imperial, MO, formerly of Pinckneyville, IL, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 2:00 a.m. in St. Anthony's Medical Center, St. Louis, MO. Betty was born on May 18, 1933 in Mt. Vernon, IL, a daughter to Grayell and Roberta (Bigham) Pursell. On November 7, 1952, she married Melvin "Duke" Presswood in Metropolis, IL and he preceded her in death on February 5, 1993. During her lifetime, Betty was employed in the offices of Carter Carburetor, St. Louis, MO, Decca Records, Consolidated Coal and the Perry County U of I Extension, Pinckneyville, IL. She was a member of New Hope Community Church, Pinckneyville, IL, where she taught Sunday school and worked with the children's music program. Betty was an avid reader, was a gifted and talented writer and kept many journals. Betty was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Betty is survived by one daughter, Paige (Presswood) Brewer of Imperial, MO; two grandchildren, Trenton and Parker Brewer of Imperial, MO; two sisters, Patricia (Gene) Place of Pinckneyville, IL and Shirley (John) Carson of Brentwood, CA; one sister-in-law, Phyliss McGee and many dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin. She was born March 13, 1918 at Princeton, IN, the daughter of Ross and Anna B. (Garrison) Barrett. She married Leonard Huggins on January 25, 1935 at Carmi, IL and he preceded her in death on June 21, 1976. She is survived by one son - Ron Huggins and wife Jackie of Tamaroa, daughter-in-law - Linda Huggins of Mt. Vernon, IL, four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son - Jim Huggins, and five sisters - Erma Bloodworth, Alice Bradshaw, Selma Tipton, Thelma Yeager, and Juanita Shute. Freddie Leslie Wilson age 76 of Mulkeytown, IL passed away 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Freddie was born on October 1, 1934 in Meta, Missouri a son of Leonard Clay and Olive Reba (Renfrow) Wilson. He married Donna Fay (McCowen) Dugger on October 7, 1997 in Tennessee; She survives in Mulkeytown. Mr. Wilson was a member of the First Christian Church in Sesser and a member of the Altamont Masonic Lodge #533. Freddie worked as a truck driver at J.D. Street for three years and then drove 25 years for Yellow Freight from which he retired. He loved music, hunting and fishing. Freddie was an expert marksman, bird dog trainer and an avid Cardinal Fan. He Served his Country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on August 25, 1957. Freddie is survived by his wife, Donna Fay Wilson of Mulkeytown, IL; two step-children, Linda and husband Mark Yates of Elkville and Mike Dugger and wife Diana of Benton; two brothers, Leonard Wilson Jr. of Dixon, Missouri and Percy Wayne Wilson of Fenton, Missouri; one sister, Betty Helton of Meta, Missouri; and also several nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Sidney was born November 19, 1919 in Friars Point Mississippi the son of Charlie and Mary Maggie Lee (Scott) Gammons. He married Fannie Madlock on February 22, 1941 and she preceded him in death on January 7, 1999. Sidney was a cotton picker for many years in the south, later worked at HyGrade Packing Company in Chicago , Inland Steel in Indiana and Midland Hotel in Chicago, IL . He was of the Baptist Faith. Sidney is survived by three sons, Sidney Gammons Jr. and wife Phyllis of Chicago, Charles Gammons and wife Linda of Chicago and Clifton Gammons and wife Clarissa of Mt. Vernon; two daughters Gwennett Gammons of Memphis, and Darlene and husband Dennis Davis of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Vernell Martin of Mt. Vernon; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and also a host of friends. He had just completed his first semester of studies at Kaskaskia College, where he played on the KC men's soccer team. Brock was a friend to many and was loved and adored by his family. While attending Trinity Lutheran School, he was an athlete and enjoyed paintball, hunting and the outdoors. In high school, Brock was an all-star athlete, lettering in soccer, football and track. His first love was playing for the Mater Dei soccer team and served as captain during his senior year. Other highlights of Brock's senior year included kicking the winning field goal for the Mater Dei Football Knights in the final seconds of a tied game against Freeburg and breaking a school track record in the 200 meter. Brock made everyone laugh. He was tender-hearted, loyal and absolutely loved sports, competition and being a team player. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly requests that donations be given in honor and celebration of Brock's life to the Mater Dei Soccer Program in Breese or Trinity Lutheran Grade School in Centralia. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, with Pastors Mark Girardin and Perry Schefelker officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at the church. Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements.
MT. VERNON - Roger Owen Irvin and Becky Eileen (Eater) Irvin will celebrate their 30th anniversary Jan. 3, 2011. Roger is the son of the late Owen Irvin and Elizabeth (Gammon) Irvin. Becky is the daughter of Marlin Eater and the late Nelda (Draege) Eater. They have four children, Rhonda (Jerry) Vessell of Brentwood, Tenn., Ryan Irvin of Bartlett, Tenn., Todd (Megan) Irvin of Pontoon Beach, daughter-in-law Kim Irvin of Brentwood, Tenn., wife of the late Rodney Owen Irvin; three grandchildren, Savannah Denae Vessell, Dalton Owen Irvin and Kayce Autumn Irvin all of Brentwood, Tenn.
