Ron Hacker, 70, of Nason, Illinois was born on May 31, 1940 passed away Monday, February 7, 2011 at his home in Nason, Illinois. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Florence (Weitzel) Hacker. Surviving are his wife Peggy Hacker and three daughters: Julie Smith and husband Craig, Tara Becker and husband Timothy, Amber Randall and husband Scott and Deanna Hacker, the mother of his children and stepchildren Wade Speer and Stacy Speer. His grandchildren: Soven and Ronan Smith, Elliot and Sullivan Becker and Owen and Aiden Randall and step grandchildren: Joshua Speer and Lana Reed; two sisters: Kathleen Elder and husband Paul and Debbie Braun and husband Dale; many nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Hacker was the owner of the Blue Gill Hole, a bait and tackle store in Nason. He was and will always be remembered as a genuine outdoorsman. Known for his love of fishing and hunting, he was well recognized as an experienced guide in the Rend Lake area. It was Ron's wish to be cremated and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. James L. Bauer, 71, Niceville, Pa., passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, at his home. He was born June 13, 1939, in Bloomington, son of Peter James and Opal (Roper) Bauer. He is survived by his wife Cheryl; son Terry Bauer and wife Becky of Florida; daughter Ramee Marbut and husband Lance of Nevada; step daughter Jaime Aupperle; brothers Robert Bauer and wife Donna of Mt. MT. VERNON - Karen Kay Davis, 67, of Champaign, passed away on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at 8:37 a.m. She was born in Salem on April 10, 1943, to Francis and Virginia Prosise Wittenbrink. She married William D. "Bill" Davis in Mt. Vernon on May 20, 1961, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Brian (Roberta) Davis of Mahomet; two daughters, Julie (Ed) Ogle of Mahomet and Jennifer (Skip) Frost of Tolono; eight grandchildren, Brittany and Brandon Davis, Melissa, Kyle and Lindsey Ogle, all of Mahomet and Ryan Howe, Jake and Lauren Frost, all of Tolono. She is also survived by two brothers, Donald (Glenda) Wittenbrink of Dix and Vernon (Linda) Wittenbrink of Haines City, Fla. Her mother, Ruth Wittenbrink of Mt. Vernon, also survives Karen. She was a customer service representative with the Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative for 19 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Champaign and loved traveling and gardening. Visitation for Karen will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West in Savoy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Champaign with visitation at the church to be from 10 to 11 a.m. The burial will take place at the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Mayview. Memorials should be directed to the First Christian Church or the Little Galilee Christian Camp in Clinton.
MT. VERNON - Ann Santoro died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at her home in Mt. Vernon. She was born on March 12, 1921, in Detroit, Mich., daughter of Vendelin and Sophie Bielak. She married Joseph Santoro on April 3, 1947, in Chicago. Joseph preceded her in death on July 25, 1985. Mrs. Santoro is survived by her three children, Warren Santoro and his former wife Francine (Schissel) Santoro of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Richard Santoro and his wife Joanne (Cook) Santoro of Chicago and by Sue (Santoro) Tomlin and her husband Bob Tomlin of Mt. Vernon. Also surviving Mrs. Santoro are her three grandchildren and their families: Jessamyn (Santoro) Brown of Chicago, Joseph Santoro, his wife Lindsay (Craft) Santoro and their soon-to-arrive son, all of Sandpoint, Idaho and Jeremy Santoro of Boise, Idaho. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Santoro was preceded in death by her parents, and by her siblings Mary (Bielak) Lukazik, Ginger Bielak, Tony Bielak and one infant brother. Mrs. Santoro worked as a homemaker as well as a bookkeeper. She was a member of the Greentree Red Hat Society and of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. She called several places home during her long life, including Detroit, Mich.; Chicago; Sun City West, Ariz.; and Mt. Vernon. At Mrs. Santoro's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. If desired, memorials can be made to the Rend Lake College Foundation to fund student scholarships or the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. MT. VERNON - Obbie Orville Atkinson, 86, was cleared for take-off from this world on Feb. 4, 2011, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Born Dec. 16, 1924, in rural Jefferson County, he was the eighth and youngest child of Joseph E. and Susie Reese Atkinson. Obbie grew up on a farm with no electricity or running water, enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII and became an aircraft commander and instructor pilot in B-29 Superfortress bombers. Beginning with his first solo in a Piper Cub in 1942, he remained an active pilot for 68 years. Obbie married his high school sweetheart, Doris Virginia Stitch of Mt. Vernon, in 1944 and they raised 3 sons and a daughter. He owned and managed a series of automobile dealerships in Mt. Vernon where he served in various community service organizations and was a member of the Mt. Vernon Airport Authority Board of Commissioners. Obbie and Doris retired to Paso Robles, Calif. in 1986, where he was a part of Methodist Ministries and a very active member of the Estrella Warbird Museum, flying the lead aircraft in Freedom Flight, a formation of WWII aircraft honoring veterans each Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Obbie is survived by his beloved wife, Doris, children Obbie Ted (Connie) of Richland, Ore., David (Kathleen) of Calgary, Alberta, Joe (Fran) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sue Lyn Goldman (Paul) of Leo, Ind.; and 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He so enjoyed sharing all of their wide-ranging interests, education and accomplishments. Clifton Elwin Cox, age 75, of Belle Rive, IL. passed away at 12:06 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Jefferson Barracks Medical Center in St. Louis. Elwin was born on September 9, 1935 in Fulton, Kentucky a son of Dallas and Sally (Newcomb) Cox. He married Ethel Aileen Ratliff on June 5, 1955 in Belle Rive. Mr. Cox worked as a barber and was a school bus driver many years with Bluford School until his retirement. He was a member of The Church of Christ on Ilberry Road in Mt. Vernon where he served as an Elder for 35 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. Elwin loved to hunt and fish. Elwin is survived by his wife Ethel Aileen Cox of Belle Rive; two sons, Stephen Cox and wife Marilyn of Foristell, MO, and Robert Cox and wife Norita of Foristell, MO; one brother Leon Cox and wife Dorothy of Wingo, KY; five grandchildren, Kerry Cox and wife Hannah, Stephanie and husband Joe Tankersley, Joshua Cox, Ashlee and husband R. J. Catizon, Sabrina and husband Brian Seiler; and also 12 great grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Chester Cox. Carole Kuhn, age 69, of Chicago, IL died 7:25 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011 at her home. Carole was born May 5, 1941 in New York, New York a daughter of Harold and Evelyn (Osbourne) Anderson. She married Rodney Kuhn, Jr. and he preceded in death October 4, 2010. Mrs. Kuhn was a homemaker. MT. VERNON - Brandi Michelle Karcher, 38, of Centralia, passed away at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital on Feb. 5, 2011, following a courageous lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. She was born on Oct. 3, 1972, graduated from Centralia High School and was an active member of Grace Church in Centralia. Brandi is survived by, and will forever be remembered by, her mother and stepfather, Patsy and Charles Phillips of Centralia; her father, Larry Karcher of McLeansboro; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kevin and Charlotte Knauss of Jacksonville, Fla.; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lynn Ann and Jeff Fritz of Sharon, Wis.; and nephews Justin and Kolton Fritz and niece Lily Fritz. She was preceded in death by her loving grandparents, Leonard and Irene Wilson and her aunt, Alice Wilson. Brandi touched the lives of everyone she met with her smile and zest for life. She maintained her positive outlook throughout and to the very end of her life. EFFINGHAM - Charles Forest Blickem, 92, a former resident of Cowden, passed away at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at White Oaks Health Care Center, Mount Vernon. Masonic rites and services were private with Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Cowden, in charge of arrangements. The Rev. Jay Huddleston officiated. Burial was in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. "Charlie" was born in Plymouth County, Iowa, on May 16, 1918, the sixth of 12 children born to Elihu E. and Grace Ellen Riley Blickem. He married Myrtle Mae Beck on July 29, 1940, in St. Charles, Mo., and she preceded him in death March 25, 1998. He was an expert welder, owning and operating a blacksmith business in Cowden in the 1950s. He was later employed in the engineering department of Oliver Corporation, Shelbyville. He retired as a pipeline welder for ADM in Decatur. He was a member of the Baptist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Greenland Lodge 665 for 66 years. He was a Shriner out of the Ainad Temple in East St. Louis.
