    1. [ILJEFFER] DNA testing
    2. Lonnie Fink
    3. Sandy, My Taylor Line No matches at all. (37 bit) My Fink line no matches at all, Darn! My matrilineal Line many matches ( just use the hi resolution only) but none I can verifiably connect Family finder lots of matches but unable to verify a match Doing family finder with my uncle and another cousin to see the results, the usefulness of this still up in the air! My Wife's THOMPSON line no matches Bumpus 67 chromosome matches have a tentative connection ALLEN 67 chromosome match (twice) with HULBERT, kind of disproving the Indian Ancestry but not quite haven't done the research in Eastern states to make the connection to that family Winingers/Ratcliff disproved the indian heritage for several of the branches (matrilineal) I am hoping the rest of old world ( Europa- Germany) gets on board with the DNA so we Americans can connect to the old world families And more FINKs get tested! LOL! Sheldon, Congrats on your success.!! YES!!! I would suggest 1st doing a 37 DNA if no matches why waste the money to do 67 at first! if there is a perfect match or near perfect with others with 67 then spend the money to upgrade from 37. Don't waste money on 12 Y-dna ( too many irrelevant non matches) do the 37 bit 1st then do 67 IMHO. 3. We have had great success with our VICK Y-DNA Surname Project.  We have hypotheses we want to test, we recruit the men necessary to test each hypothesis, and we test a wide selection of locations on the Y chromosome for some members of each of the lines from an ancestor (beyond the 110-marker panel that Family Tree DNA is about to offer).  Unless you recruit men to test a hypothesis you may be waiting a long time to get a match who can help with a question about your line.   We also have an autosomal project at 23andMe, and we have had some success stories there.  The good news with an autosomal project is that aren’t limited to one line like you are with a surname project.  Even better news is that both men and women can test unlike in a Y-DNA project where only men can test.  The bad news is that since you aren’t limited to one line, you must figure out which of your lines your match is in.  Both people who match need deep pedigrees in many cases to find the shared ancestor.  Still, it is nice finding new cousins with information you don’t have.   There is a nice success story in the 9 February 2011 "Rootsweb Review" titled "An Unexpected Name Change Verified with DNA."  It is about a third of the way into the newsletter and the title is small, so you have to look carefully to find it.   http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/review/2011/0209.html   Regards,   Larry ________________________________ From: Sandy Bauer <sandy@whalen-family.org> To: ilfrankl@rootsweb.com; iljeffer@rootsweb.com; "ILWayne@rootsweb.com" <ILWAYNE@rootsweb.com>; ilhamilt@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, February 9, 2011 9:35:41 PM Subject: [ILJEFFER] DNA testing Are you are participating in a DNA project?  I'm curious if people are jumping on board with DNA testing and it it's proving successful for them. 3. I have a "success" DNA story :-) (some of you may know this...) My maternal grandmother's lines are all southern IL (she was b. 1894 Moores Prairie Twp., JCI with ancestry all around there) To make this a "short" story: my father was told by his mother on her death bed in 1970 that he was not a JONES, but he was really son of a Jerome or Francis or some such... We had more family info than this, but I won't go through all the good and bad... It took me a few years to research that my grandfather was "probably" a Frank JEROME that was in the right place and time to be my grandfather... I ended up getting a full DNA analysis done (SuperDNA @ familytreedna) I had to find another direct male descendant to get tested since I didn't immediately match anyone... This took quite a while, but I did get connected with a biologist at Duke University who ended up getting her 1st cousin, a professor at Vanderbilt in Nashville to have his DNA done. Prof. Walter Jerome matches 64 y-chromosome markers exactly with mine and we are one allele off on the other 3. This is pretty accurate in saying we have a common ancestor in 7 generations or so - and I know exactly how we are. I am the reason there is a JEROME DNA project at familytreeDNA -- everyone tells me "all" JEROME's in U.S. descend from Timothy JEROME (1688 - abt 1749); this didn't help me since I wasn't sure I was a JEROME or not ! Frank Carlton JEROME d. in 1937 (my father was 16 at the time and never knew Frank). Frank apparently never did marry, though he apparently had two children by my paternal grandmother - my grandmother and Mark JONES divorced in 1921 shortly after my father was born... oh them roaring 20's... (she was something else.. nuff said) Comments for those thinking of DNA: a) I would highly recommend familytreeDNA ; if you are male, please get all 67 markers done. I had several matches with 12 and 37 markers-- this only gets you connected within 20+ generations (see www.familytreedna.com website). I expect sometime soon they will be doing more markers as more samples are in the database and they can do the research to determine mutation rates on potential other markers. (I did SuperDNA in April 2008 and ended up doing a deep clade test later on) b) Not really sure how much worth the mitochondria DNA mapping is - I have thousands of mtDNA matches; this doesn't mutate very rapidly and I think until the database is considerably larger with more markers, this only has very limited genealogy value. It is interesting from an "ancient" ancestry perspective. I don't know much about this "new" Family Finder method that is using markers on other chromosomes -- though, I will probably have this done at some point... -SRJ > -----Original Message----- > From: ilfrankl-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ilfrankl- > bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sandy Bauer > Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2011 7:36 PM > To: ilfrankl@rootsweb.com; iljeffer@rootsweb.com; > ILWayne@rootsweb.com; ilhamilt@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILFRANKL] DNA testing > > Are you are participating in a DNA project? 3. Are you are participating in a DNA project? I'm curious if people are jumping on board with DNA testing and it it's proving successful for them. I've had my son do that DNA test for his THURMAN family (my first husband's line). I've contributed to a DAVIS male to do the DNA test, gotten a BUTLER cousin to do the DNA test and gotten my brother to do the DNA test for our WHALEN family. So far no "Eureka" moments. Anyone else having more positive results? Sandy (Whalen) Bauer
