CARBONDALE -- William D. "Bill" Sanders, 83, died 7:29 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born March 31, 1927, in West Frankfort, the son of Rome and Martha Sanders. He was married to the former Marilyn Richardson of Mount Vernon on June 27, 1959. She survives along with one daughter, Amy Russell; son-in-law, J.R. Russell and four grandchildren, Reid Burke, Caitlin Burke, Jessica Russell and Jaidyn Russell; several nieces and nephews; and two brothers-in-law. He graduated from Benton High School and served stints in the Army and Air Force between 1946 and 1957 and was involved in post-World War II occupation in Europe. A 1968 graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bill pastored several churches in the area over a number of years. Bill was a member of Murdale Baptist Church, the VFW, the Noonday Kiwanis Club and volunteered for the Baptist Student Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, in Murdale Baptist Church in Carbondale, with Pastor Paul Hicks presiding. Interment will be at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at the church. Memorials to Murdale Baptist Church are the preferred form of remembrance and will be accepted by Meredith Funeral Home, which is assisting the family with the arrangements. Clarence Roscoe Lance age 83, of Mt. Vernon passed away 9:55 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Clarence was born February 25, 1927 in Thompsonville, IL a son of Clarence Etham Lance and Eliza (Webb) Lance. He married Norma Jean (Reed) on November 21, 1951 in Hamilton County, Illinois and she preceded him in death on February 28, 2007. Mr. Lance retired from General Radiator in Mt. Vernon. He served his country in the United States Army. He attended several local churches where he was active in the music ministry. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Lynn Lance of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Tracy L. McDonough of Mt. Vernon, Paul J. Kite and wife Amber, of Amarillo, Texas, Chris J. Kite of Decatur, IL and April C. Kite of Decatur, IL and one great grandson Aydin C. Kite; and also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one infant sister: Lena Lance. She married Bobby Lee Watts on Sept. 18, 1948, and he preceded her in death on April 18, 2010. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Mrs. Watts was a member of the Ina Baptist Church. MOUNT VERNON -- Travis Howard Shaw, 29, formerly of Carbondale, died Feb. 4, 2011, at his home. Travis was born Oct. 22, 1981, in Carbondale to Shelia (Rathert) Shaw and Ronald Shaw. Travis was a free spirit who enjoyed music, writing, poetry, short stories and working with his hands. Travis never knew a stranger. Everyone who knew him loved him, laughed with him and was fascinated by his unique qualities and ability to be a compassionate and loving young man. As Travis travels into peace and open arms, he leaves behind his brother, Lance; and sister-in-law, Mandi Shaw; and his little nephew whom he adored, Harley Cooper Shaw of Carbondale. His mother, Shelia Shaw and husband, Paul Johnson, of Mount Vernon, Ind.; grandmother, Barbara Austin and her husband, Marvin Austin, of Mount Vernon; his uncle, Kevin Rathert of Carbondale; and two wonderful cousins, Bardot Rathert and Roman Rathert of Carbondale. Travis waited for wings and now he is free to fly to a happier place, where his maternal grandfather Harley Dean Rathert has been waiting to embrace him with open arms. Vernon, Illinois; grandson: Michael Hennebique of Kent, Ohio; 2 sisters: Darlene Ziegler and husband Charles of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Arlene Hicks of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; brother-in-law: Charles Clark of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; several nieces and nephews also survive. Her parents, one sister: Patricia Clark and one brother-in-law: Bob Hicks preceded her in death. Sharon was a homemaker and later worked for Addus Healthcare Systems; she was a very caring person who loved to help others. VISITATION: will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. service time Wednesday, February 16, 2011 in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. FUNERAL SERVICES: will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Reverend Gary Davenport will officiate. INTERMENT: Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois.
