    3. Norma F. Lenington, 63, of Bonnie, Illinois passed away at 7:15 A.M. on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Norma was born on Wednesday, January 28, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri the daughter of the late Walter and Lucille Fay Henson. Surviving family members include her special friend: Danny Capps of Bonnie, Illinois; son: Scott Lenington and fiancee Nicole Bolyard of Bonnie, Illinois; 3 grandchildren: Timothy Lenington of Ewing, Illinois, Kaitlyn Lenington of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Andrew Lenington of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; great granddaughter: Kelsey Walters of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; mother-in-law: Maxine Lenington of Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Her parents preceded her in death. Norma was a Certified Nurses Aide at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor and was of the Christian Faith. VISITATION: will be held from 5 to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 11, 2011 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.     3. Loraine Virginia Williams, 89, of Byron and formerly of Bluford, died Monday, March 7, 2011, in Prairieview of Winnebago. She was born April 23, 1921, in Black River Falls, Wisc., the daughter of Henry & Virginia Phillips Taylor. She graduated from Black River Falls High School. She married Edward J. Williams in Beloit, Wisc. on July 12, 1942, and he died in 1994. Loraine was a bookkeeper for Mt. Vernon Farm Services for 25 years. Survivors include her daughter, Linda (Jim) Swanson of Stillman Valley; grandchildren, Eric (Jill) Swanson and Adam (Melissa) Swanson both of Byron, & Kathryn (Lt. Brent) Schmadeke of Traverse City, Mich.; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Williams of Mt. Vernon; a brother-in-law, Bill (Arlene) Williams of Spartanburg, N.C.; and nephews, Brian Meek of Black River Falls, Wisc. & Ron Williams of Woodlawn. She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers, and nieces, Nancy Meek and Joy Williams. Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City.     3. Herbert Samuel Mulkey died at his home on March 7, 2011, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., at the age of 91. He was born May 23, 1919, in Cypress to Ida and Herbert Samuel Mulkey, Sr. He attended Cypress Grade and High School finishing at Anna-Jonesboro High School (class of 1937). He then attended Southeast Missouri State University (class of 1942) on a full-ride scholarship for basketball and track. He married Betty Jo Taylor of Vienna on October 9, 1943, in Hollywood, Calif. They had four children: Alan (Joyce) Mulkey of Apache Junction, Ariz.; Jana (Jimmy) Williams of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Ann (David) Farley of Mt. Vernon; and Lynn Ellen Mulkey (deceased). Herb's wife, Betty; an infant daughter; his parents; and a sister, Rudell (Woody) Childers preceded him in death. He later married the former Joan Fear of Anna on March 24, 1999, in Hopkinsville, Ky. He is survived by his wife, Joan, his children, Alan (Joyce) Mulkey, Jana (Jimmy) Williams, and Ann (David) Farley; grandchildren, Kaitlin (Tom) Stearns of Florissant, Mo.; Kirsten Farley of Mt. Vernon; Harry (Crystal) Mulkey of Mt. Vernon; Christy Ann, Heather, Danny, and Chrissi Lynn of Arizona; stepchildren, LaDonna Clymore of Anna; Phil (Beth) Goines of Shawneetown; and Tom (Michelle) Goines of Cypress; and step-grandchildren, Kim Clymore of Joilet; Valerie (Andy) Rhymer of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; Michael Goines of Cypress; and Heather Goines of Marion. Seven step great grandchildren also survive. His granddaughter, Kaitlin, is expecting his first great-grandchild, a boy, due in July 2011. He was inducted into Southeast Missouri State University Hall of Fame in October 2003 for his outstanding track and basketball achievements. He qualified for the Olympics in 1942, but was denied the chance because of World War II. He held the high jump record of 6' 6" with the "Western Roll" technique at SEMO University for the next 20 years until the technique was changed nationwide. He entered the Navy on active duty on September 3, 1942, and received his Flight Wings from the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. After being discharged from the Navy on July 8, 1943, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps as second Lieutenant on July 9, 1943, and was a fighter pilot in World War II. He flew the SPD-5 Dauntless Dive Bomber. On March 10, 1945, he was shot down in the Pacific Ocean, and he and his gunner spent nine and a half hours in a life raft at sea before being rescued. Herb was sent to a naval hospital in the Philippine Islands to recover. He was later discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps on May 1, 1946. Herb taught school and coached football, basketball, and track at Arthur High School in Arthur. He later sold insurance for Prudential Insurance Company. Along with his wife, Betty, he owned and managed a restaurant, "Mulkey's," on Broadway in Cape Girardeau, Mo. in 1947. His janitorial sales career started with Churchill Company in 1956. In 1972, he became co-owner of Chemical Maintenance, Inc. Later in 1976, he started and owned Southern Chemical Company in Mt. Vernon. He sold his company in 1986 and was still working part-time for the company up until his death. He was a member of the American Legion AMVETS, VFW Post 3838 of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and was a lifetime member of the Arthur Masonic Lodge No. 825 in Arthur. In 1970, he was instrumental in annexing the Summersville community into the city of Mt. Vernon. Herb was a highly respected, courageous, and compassionate individual. His love of life and pride for his family will never be forgotten. He will be dearly missed. Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak, is in charge of funeral arrangements. A private family visitation will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home on Thursday at 10 a.m. A graveside service is being held at his request at the Masonic Cemetery in Cypress. Graveside military rights will be inducted. All friends wishing to attend the graveside service should arrive by 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Steve Heisner will officiate the service.     3. I'm betting this good man was a descendant of Philip or John Mulkey (I get mixed signals as to which), a very early preacher of the Christian Church and founder of Mulkeytown.     3. WEST FRANKFORT -- Hugh Dale Gifford, 85, formerly of West Frankfort, a former local businessman, died Saturday, March 5, 2011, in Lake Wales Florida Rehab Center after a heart attack. He was born Sept. 30, 1925, in West Frankfort, the son of Emory and Myrtle (Tharp) Gifford. His parents preceded him in death. Dale was a West Frankfort businessman from 1946 to 1995 when he sold his business. He operated Gifford's Ace Hardware Store on West Poplar and Gifford's Gift Shop on East Main Street for 49 years. He retired to Lily Lake in Frostproof, Fla., where he enjoyed the Florida sunshine. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran during the 1940s. Surviving relatives include two uncles, Dwight Tharp of West Frankfort, Ethridge (Lola) Tharp, Christopher; cousins, Dean (Sylvia) Tharp and Annetta Tharp of West Frankfort, Judy and (George) Buck and Diane Rhodes of Springfield, Jean Berger of Newburgh, Ind., Sue (Dave) Painter of North Carolina, Jackie (Tom) Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., Janice (Dale) Richardson and Judy (Kenny) Pearce of Ewing; special friends, Mike Boose, Harold "Bud" and Sue Conn of Frostproof, Fla., and Henry and Cathy Bozic of Avon Park, Fla.     3. MOUNT VERNON -- Dr. Meda Kay Hirons Thompson, 55, of Bolingbrook, formerly of Mount Vernon, died at 11:55 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2011, in Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born Saturday, July 23, 1955, in Mount Vernon, to Malcolm and Rose P. (Page) Hirons. She married Neil "Rusty" Thompson on June 8, 1975, in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, in Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, with J. Howard Kraps officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the funeral home. Dr. Meda Thompson obtained her first teaching position in 1978 with the Sandoval Community School District 501 for grades seven and eight remedial reading and mathematics program; from 1978 to 1980 she was learning disabilities research teacher for Kell Consolidated School District C-2; from 1980 to 1986 she was a special education teacher for Williamson County, Carterville and Herrin Community School Districts, during which, in 1982, she earned her Master of Science in education administration and supervision from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville; from 1986 to 1989 she was program coordinator for Tri-County Special Education District in Perry County; from 1989 to 1994 she was principal, Chapter I (Title I) director and K-12 curriculum director for Carterville Community Unit School District No. 5; from 1994-99 she was assistant superintendent of instruction for Marion Community Unit School District No. 2 and attained her Doctor of Philosophy in educational administration from Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and from 1999 to her retirement in 2010 she was K-12 director of curriculum, then principal of what was then B.J. Ward Middle School and finally as Valley View School District 365U's director of professional development.     3. Charles Ray Neal, 69, of Mount Vernon, Illinois died at 12:26 P.M. on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at his residence in Mount Vernon. He was born on December 27, 1941 in Mount Vernon to parents Harvey and Samelda (Davis) Neal. He married Marlene (Lee) Neal on March 20, 1965 in Bedford, England. He is survived by his wife: Marlene Neal of Mount Vernon, three daughters: Nicky Stewart of St. Petersburg, Florida; Lisa Smith and husband Lee of Godfrey, Illinois; and Michelle Neal of Mount Vernon, a son: Chris Neal of Mount Vernon, six grandchildren: Chelsea Witzel; Ray Stewart; Tara Koch; Braden Smith; Reif Sloan; and Rayne Sloan, two great grandsons: Rhylyn Sloan and Owen Koch, two brothers: John Neal and Walter Neal and wife Barbara all of Mount Vernon. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Lester Neal and Duke Neal. He served in the United States Marine Corp., attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, enjoyed fishing, and was a member of the American Legion Post #141 and the Mount Vernon Gun and Sportsman Club. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mount Vernon, Illinois 62864.     3. MT. VERNON - Gary Lloyd Hodge, age 79, of Waltonville, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011, at the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital in Columbia, Mo. Gary was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Waltonville, a son of Charles Quincy and Anna Mae (Rightnowar) Hodge. He married Rose (Morales) January 25, 1956, in Newark, N.J. She preceded him in death in 1983. Gary joined the Illinois National Guard in February1949 and served until the Korean War began, he then enlisted into the U.S. Navy. Gary served in the supply department of the Navy during the Korea and Vietnam conflicts. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Storekeeper on January 25, 1972. Gary and his family moved to Waltonville, where he worked for the Waltonville Post Office as a rural mail carrier and retired in 1993. Gary was active in veterans' affairs on the local and state level. He is a Past Commander and life member of VFW Post 9153 in Waltonville. Gary is also a Past AMVETS Post 4, Commander, Mt. Vernon and Past Department Commander, Department of Illinois AMVETS; also, Past Commander and honorary life member of American Legion Post 141, Mt. Vernon. He is life member of DAV chapter 28, Mt. Vernon, Korean War Veterans, Member Fleet Reserve Association, U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, Mt. Vernon Gun and Sportsman's Club, Inc., A.F. & A.M. In 1991, Gary organized AMVETS Post 148 in Waltonville with 104 members. Gary stayed active in veterans' affairs by serving Waltonville, Mt. Vernon and nearby towns. He helped any veteran get assistance from the Veteran Administration. He knew the process of filing claims, thus speeding up the service. He often took veterans to their appointments even to Columbia, Missouri to help them get more advanced care. He would stop off at Scott Air Force Base along the way to drive them around the base, take them to the PX, and never asked for anything in return. Gary is survived by one son, Lloyd "Chuck" Hodge and wife Genola of Columbia, Mo.; one daughter, Cynthia Hodge of Manteno; four grandchildren, Dalton and Genae Hodge and Connor and Victoria Perkins; one sister, Lucille Fagen Newell of Waltonville; and also special friend, Norma Lee Jones of Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, Gary Wayne Hodge; two sisters, Estelle Holloway and Irene Green; three brothers, James Olin Hodge, William Francis Hodge and Charles Ray Hodge. Funeral services for Gary Hodge will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Chaplain Ernie Collins officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. For those wishing, memorials may be given in memory of Gary Lloyd Hodge to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home. Mrs. Thomas was born on September 19, 1910 in Akin, IL the daughter of Matthew Ing and Elizabeth Jane "Ollie" (Jones) Ing. She married William Thomas on June 28, 1934 in East Alton, IL. Della spent most of her married life as a homemaker, cooking, baking and tending her flowers. She worked a short time in a restaurant in Midlothian, IL and also part-time at Largent's Nursing Home in Midlothian, IL. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed Bible study. Surviving relatives include three children, Arnold Thomas, Peoria, IL, Donald Thomas, Waterman, IL, Brenda Meents, Frankfort, IL, seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Roy Ing, Manteno, IL and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
