    3. \MT. VERNON - Mildred M. Beckman, 90, of Mt. Vernon, died at 7:34 a.m. Saturday March 19, 2011, at the Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. Mildred was born on Aug. 16, 1920, in Bonnie, a daughter of Albert and Fern (Locher) Hale. She married Virgil Beckman on Jan. 22, 1940, in Paducah, Ky. and he preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1978. Mildred was a homemaker and was a member of the Bonnie United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Rozella Hayes and husband Clyde of Bonnie; a grandson, Dale Hayes and wife Mariah of Benton; a granddaughter, Tawnya Adams and husband David of Bonnie; three great-grandchildren, Cameron Young, Maddie Hayes and John Adams; a brother, Bee Hale of Bonnie; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hale, an aunt, Freda Garrett; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Bertram and Marion Hale; and special Aunt Francis Gower. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Revs. Leland Hale and Gary Whipple officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.     3. ROBERT VIRGIL WALSH, 92, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 11:50 A.M. on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Robert was born April 9, 1918 in Grayville, Illinois, a son to the late Thomas Virgil & Daisy (Bisch) Walsh. He graduated college at the University of Illinois finished law school there in 1949. He settled in Mt. Vernon and chose an active career in the business of oil and gas leasing and production. Mr. Walsh was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 1962 and served two terms. Due to his popularity, he won reelection in 1964 on the infamous statewide â?oorangeâ? ballot, also known as the â?obed sheetâ? ballot. He was a principal sponsor of legislation to establish a bi-state airport at Lawrenceville, Illinois. During the 1970â?Ts Robert was Chairman of the Jefferson County Democrat Party. Representative Walsh returned to the legislature in 1977 to fill the remainder of William Oâ?TDanielâ?Ts term when Oâ?TDaniel received a federal appointment. Mr. Walsh also served as an aide to Secretary of State Paul Powell and travelled throughout the country with Powell. Many believe Powell would have easily been elected Governor but for his untimely death. Robert had many interesting stories from that colorful period in Illinois politics. He later owned a race pony which, with whimsical irony, he named â?oShoebox Kidâ?. Mr. Walsh was a delegate to the 1976 Democrat Convention in New York City and participated in the nomination of President Jimmy Carter. At the age of 90 years, Mr. Walsh went to Denver for the 2008 Democrat Convention where he participated in the nomination of the President and was seated in a place of honor with the Illinois Delegation. Robert met and supported many candidates for public office. He remembered meeting President Harry Truman, Ambassador Averill Harriman, President Lyndon Johnson, Attorney-General Robert Kennedy, Vice-President Hubert Humphrey, Governor Otto Kerner, Governor James Thompson, President Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter, President Bill and Hilary Clinton, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, Governor Patrick Quinn and others too numerous to mention. Mr. Walsh enjoyed a warm friendship with Senator Paul and Representative Jeanne Simon. Mr. Walsh was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army and was a member of numerous civic and fraternal organizations, including the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, The AMVETS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge. He belonged and contributed to several organizations dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and the environment. VISITATION will be from 5 to 7:00 P.M. She was born on Monday, July 14, 1919 in Benton, Illinois, a daughter to the late John Arvel & Susie Ann (Fletcher) Scrutchfield. She was first married to Howard L. Sursa in 1937. She later married Welldon "Dud" Dusharme in 1957 in Mount Vernon, Illinois and he preceded her in death in 1999. Along with her parents and husband, one daughter: Frieda Louise Sursa Loper, two brothers: Harry and Clifford Scrutchfield, two sisters: Liza Scrutchfield and Christine (Scrutchfield) Piercefield and special brother-in-law: Andy Pace preceded her in death.     3. Scott Alan Whiting, 51, of Vienna, Va., and formerly of McLeansboro, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Whiting was a self-employed carpenter. He was born Jan. 16, 1960, in Woodstock, a son of Thomas A. and Norma Jean (Moore) Whiting. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dahlgren, at a later date. Survivors include his mother, Norma Jean Whiting; five brothers, Thomas Wright and wife Ruth of Stafford, Va., John Whiting and wife Sandra of Virginia Beach, Va., Terry Whiting of Stafford, Va., Steve Whiting and wife Eva of Lakeland, Fla., and Kelly Whiting and wife Sonja of Ina; one sister, Jodi Schuster and husband Stephen of Dahlgren; several nieces and nephews; and three great-nephews. Mr. Whiting was Baptist by faith. He loved to tinker and work on projects.     3. CREAL SPRINGS -- Neil D. Knight, 79, passed away at 5:49 a.m., Monday, March 14, 2011, in Herrin Hospital in Herrin. Neil, the son of Clarence E. and Thelma Ruth (Chamness) Knight, was born April 15, 1931, in Mount Vernon. He was united in marriage to Eva Lee Sinks on April 8, 1951, in Mount Vernon and together they shared more than 53 years of marriage until her death June 27, 2004. Neil answered the call of the nation by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, and after his period of faithful service, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class. Neil was an avid reader and especially loved reading science fiction books. He enjoyed "Cats" and other theater productions. He was a baseball fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Southern Illinois Miners of Marion. He always enjoyed following the activities of his family and especially of his grandson, Dustin, who was an all-star high school basketball player and received a basketball scholarship at Shawnee Community College and is now a teacher at Washington Grade School in Marion. He enjoyed eating at Western Sizzler where his grandson, Christopher, works. His family was most important to him and he always enjoyed the times they shared together, especially with his grandchildren, and he enjoyed the company of his dog, Bear. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by three sons, Duane Knight of Marion, Darrell Knight of Creal Springs and Larry Knight of Herrin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Gary Bush and Lola and Robert Wolaver, all of Marion, and Rita Diane and Michael Simmons of Creal Springs; grandsons, Christopher Knight and Dustin Knight, who he raised as his own sons after the death of their father, Jerry Knight; 12 other grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Herbert Denham of Mount Vernon; other family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eva; son, Jerry Knight on May 27, 2001; granddaughter, Robin Knight in January 1993, and two brothers, Noel Dean Chamness and Marvin Knight. She married Carroll Glenn Gregory on March 29, 1953 at Summersville Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Surviving family members include her husband: Carroll Glenn Gregory of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 3 sons: Larry C. Gregory and wife Donna of Beijing, China, Eddie L. Gregory and wife Nancy of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Daniel W. Someone on ancestry.com believe his wife was Angeline Sursa but I had his wife as Chilton.     3. MT. VERNON - Roy Allen Knapp, age 85, of Pinckneyville, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011, at 11:25 p.m. at Nature Trail Health Center in Mt. Vernon. Roy was born on Nov. 7, 1925, in Du Quoin, a son to Nelson C. and Elle Marie (McElroy) Knapp. On July 24, 1947, he married Betty Hubler in Pinckneyville, and she survives. Roy was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving during WW II in the South Pacific Theater. He owned and operated Knapp Bus Services and Hubler Auto Sales for many years. Roy was a member of First Baptist Church, the Presswood-Daffron American Legion and the Masonic Lodge, all in Pinckneyville and was past president of Mueller Hill Cemetery. He was a loyal fan of the Pinckneyville Panthers and dearly loved spending time with his family. Roy is survived by his wife; one son, Ted (Susan) Knapp of Mt. Vernon; two grandchildren, Jared Knapp of Mt. Vernon and Megan Knapp of St. Louis, Mo.; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roger Knapp; and two sisters, Roberta Vineyard and Eileen in infancy. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Brother Tim Bauersachs officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Tuesday from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church from 8 until 10:00 a.m. Masonic services will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Carmi Baptist Children's Home.     3. JOHNSTON CITY -- Glen Gene McCabe, 71, passed away at 1 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, in Heartland Medical Regional Center. Glen was born Dec. 18, 1939, in Mount Vernon to Clinton and Helen (Cochran) McCabe. He married Harriett Osman on Nov. 12, 1966, in Marion. Glen and Harriett shared 44 years of marriage together. Glen was a retired coal miner, having worked at Freeman United Orient No. 6. He also was very involved in his community, having served as a Johnston City alderman, volunteer firefighter, auxiliary police officer and member of the Johnston City police and fire merit board. Glen also was a member of Benton Masonic Lodge 64 and UMWA. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, playing cards and fishing. He also enjoyed baseball and was an avid Cardinals fan. Glen is survived by his wife, Harriett Osman-McCabe of Johnston City; two sons, Glen Dutcher and wife, Pam, of Chichester, N.H., and Scott McCabe of Johnston City; seven grandchildren, Desiree Brown of Chichester, N.H., Maricel Dutcher and Nicholas Casiple of Jacksonville, Fla., Thomas Dutcher and Tyson Dutcher of Orange Park, Fla., Daniel Guetersloh of Johnston City and Cherish Fogt of Ballwin, Mo.; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Sanford and husband, Bill, of St. Peters, Mo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, special friends and caregivers, Sharon and Frank Olkoski of Herrin, and other special friends too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frances Thompson and Barbara Marlow; and one brother, Tommy Thompson. Masonic rites will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2011, with celebration of life services afterward in Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Danny Campbell officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital . Memorial envelopes are available at the funeral home.

    3. Marion - Scott "Scotty" Dean Riley, 18, of Marion, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 28, 2011 at the Second Baptist Church in West Frankfort at 1902 E. Oak Street, with Pastor Brett Beasley officiating. Burial will be at Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, February 27, 2011 after 4:00 p.m., at the church in West Frankfort. Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville is in charge of arrangements. Scotty was born on October 1, 1992 in Carbondale to Ralph Dean and Sherri Lee (Stanley) Riley. He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Sherri Riley of Marion; sister, Sarah Marie Riley of Marion; paternal grandparents, Ronald D. and Maggie Riley of Pittsburg; maternal grandmother, Kathy Stanley of Marion; uncles and aunts, Ronald and Beth Riley of Woodlawn, Debby Robertson and her significant other, Chuck Tervin of Berkley, Calif., Benny Stanley of Marion, and Stephen and Tammy Stanley of Suisun, Calif.; several cousins and many close friends. Scotty was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Benny Stanley and great uncle, Donald R. Riley. He attended Marion and Crab Orchard schools. Scotty worked at the McDonald's in Marion. He enjoyed hunting, listening to music and getting into shenanigans with his friends. Most of all, Scotty loved his family.

    3. LARRY J. ROBERTSON, 69, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 3:20 A.M. Sunday, March 13, 2011 in the Emergency Department of Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born on Sunday, October 26, 1941 in Johnston City, Illinois, a son to the late Clyde & Nellie (Summers) Robertson. He married Anna Mae Dixon on May 3, 1969 in Mount Vernon, Illinois and she survives in Mount Vernon along with Son: Jeff Robertson; three Daughters: Jill Staley and husband Shawn, Bobbi Braddy and husband James, Lisa George and husband Ron; Grandchildren: Chelsie, Brandon and Breanna George, Autumn, Somer, Addison and Peighton Braddy, Dacoda, Katelyn, McKenzie and Candice Staley all of Mount Vernon; four Brothers: Cletus Rainey and Robert Rainey of Mount Vernon, Leland Rainey of Harrisburg, Illinois and Paul Eugene Robertson of Effingham, Illinois; three Sisters: Virginia June Richard and husband Wayne of Mount Vernon, Eva Kolb of Enterprise, Alabama and Mary Lou Higgenbotham and husband Harold of Effingham, Illinois. Several Nieces and Nephews also Survive. His parents and one brother: Lincoln Robertson preceded him in death. Larry served in the U.S. Army in the mid-1960's, was later manager of the Clark Super 100 filling station in Mount Vernon and was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan.
