MT. VERNON - Albert F. Webb, 99, of Monticello, Fla., and formerly of Mt. Vernon and Maryville, Tenn., died on March 20, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Webb was born on Feb. 6, 1912, in Moore's Prairie Township, the son of Charles and Norma (Ursery) Webb. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. aboard the U.S.S. Carteret. After the war, he worked at the Mt. Vernon Railroad Car Mfg. Co. as a switchman in the railway yard and after that he was the owner and operator of a grocery store located at 17th and College Streets. In the 1950s, he owned and operated Star Market on South 10th Street for many years before joining the U.S. Postal Service and serving for several years as a postal carrier before retiring from that position in 1972. Mr. Webb enjoyed fishing and playing pinochle, but his favorite hobby was gardening and he was able to enjoy that hobby until his final few years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 41 years, Violet M. (Johnson) Webb; his wife, Nancy (Garland) Webb of Maryville, Tenn.; his daughter, Janet Ann Mason of Maryville, Tenn.; and sisters Claudia Britton, Velma Friar, Evelyn Thompson and Norma Bevis Williams. He is survived by his son, Terry R. Webb and wife Marilyn of Monticello, Fla.; daughter Gloria Kay Jones and husband Kenneth of Lufkin, Texas; daughter Sherry Sue Merrick and husband Tappan of Sunnyvale, Calif.; son-in-law John W. Masson of Marshall, N.C.; sister Fern Williams; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Webb was of the Baptist Faith. As per his wishes, Mr. Webb was cremated and his ashes interred next to his wife in the family plot at Kirk Cemetery in Ina.

MT. VERNON - Julius Lavern Ahlf, 89, of Centralia, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Centralia Manor. Julius was born on June 3, 1921, in Centralia, the son of Julius and Nora (Wedekemper) Ahlf. He married Betty Dukes in 1943, in St. Charles, Mo., and she preceded him in death on April 9, 2003. Mr. Ahlf is survived by a son, Michael Ahlf and wife Suzanne of Dix; four grandchildren, Mark Ahlf, Jamie Ahlf, Kelly Ahlf and Julia Walker; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; and a daughter, Janice. Mr. Ahlf was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion and Amvets. He was manager of AP Store in Mt. Vernon for over 30 years. He also owned and operated Verns Standard Station in Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Mausoleum. Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia. MT. VERNON - James N. "Jim" Walker, 80, of Mt. Vernon, died 12:27 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011, at St. Mary's Health Care in Clayton, Mo. He was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Vandalia, the son of Lewis Henry Walker and Ina Mae (Clemens) Walker. He married Ellen (Casper) Walker Sept. 12, 1954, in Vienna; she survives in Mt. Vernon. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Pat Spicuzza and husband Jim of Mt. Vernon; a son, Mike Walker of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Katie Spicuzza of Chicago, Laura Spicuzza of San Diego, David Spicuzza of Mt. Vernon, Shannon Walker of Lexington, Ky., Kristen Walker of Chicago and Peter Walker of Mt. Vernon; a brother, William Clemens Walker and wife Betty Ann of Florida; a sister, Elizabeth Jane Walker Franks of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Newton D. Walker. Jim Walker, president of Big Chief Auto/Truck Plaza, Inc., received the 1993 Citizen of the Year award at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce's annual dinner at the Ramada Hotel. Jim had been with Big Chief since 1978, and had experience in the motel and automobile sales field in Mt. Vernon; Carbondale; Salem; Evansville, Ind.; Bloomington, Ind.; and Ft. Laurderdale, Fla. Jim was a member of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Elks Lodge, Mt. Vernon Tourism Board, Kiwanis Club, United Way of Jefferson County, Veterans of Foreign Wars, First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon and was on the board for Habitat for Humanity. He was also a board member of Security/Boatman's Bank from 1982 through 1990. He was a 1949 graduate of Vienna High School and received an associate degree in business from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1956. Jim also served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954, stationed in Berlin, Germany. He had a strong love for the Lord and his family was of the upmost importance to him and he had a life long love of hunting and shooting. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Revs. David Eadie and Victor Long officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Flag presentation will be conducted by American Legion Post 141 chaplain at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.
