Marvin R. Barkau, age 52, of Nashville, Illinois, passed away at7:20 A.M. on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at his home in Nashville, Illinois. He was born on June 26, 1958 in Nashville, Illinois, the son of Walter L. and M. Lorraine (McClain) Barkau. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Angela R. Barkau, sister Hazel Mathews and brother Hershel Barkau. Left to mourn his passing is a son; Jason Barkau of Nashville, Illinois, daughter, Amy Barkau of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, grandchildren Katlynn Pflasterer and Jason Barkau, Jr, brother Walter F. Barkau, Jr and wife Florence of Nashville, Illinois and sisters Flora Barkau of Nashville, Illinois and Karen Perkey and husband Ronald of Spring Grove, Illinois. Mr. Barkau enjoyed baseball, NASCAR Racing, fishing, and mushroom hunting. He loved life and lived it to his fullest. Mr. Barkau was formerly employed as a laborer with the Sparta Sanitation Company. Kenneth Leo "Kenny" Knappier, 50, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 2:05 A.M. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Kenny was born on Wednesday, May 18, 1960 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois the son of the late Leo George and Carolyn (Patty) Knappier. Surviving family members include his sister: Patty Louise Knappier of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; several nieces and nephews also survive. His parents and two brothers: Melvin Eugene and Billy Joe Knappier preceded him in death. Kenny was a packer and stocker in the meat department at the Mt. MT. VERNON - Helen McCormick, 80, of Marion, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at Parkway Manor Nursing Home. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1998. She is survived by her children, Robert and Rebecca McCormick of Belle Rive, Danny McCormick of Benton and Danny Ray and April Lynn McCormick of Mt. MT. VERNON - Byford Stanton Brown, 85, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2011, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born Monday, Aug. 17, 1925, in Mt. Vernon, to Thomas and Velma (Williford) Brown. He married Delores Darnell in 1950 in Mississippi. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Interment will follow at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. There will be no visitation. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Delores Brown of Mt. Vernon; a son, Jerry Brown and wife Sandi of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Cindy Goss and husband Jim of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, Jennifer Brown of Mt. Vernon, Jerod Brown of Mt. Vernon and Jamie Alvarado and husband Mark of Chicago; two great-grandsons, Nicholas and Robert Alvarado of Chicago; two sisters, Donna Hines of Mt. Vernon and Norma Birckett of Geff; and several nieces and nephews also survive. His parents, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. Byford entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and received basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He was transferred to the 20th Armored Division for training at Camp Campbell, Ky., (now known as Fort Campbell). He was assigned as a medium tank battalion crew member of General Patton's "Super Sixth" Armored Division, 9th Armored Infantry "A" Company that fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forest region of southern Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany and lasted from Dec. 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. Byford was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on April 21, 1946. Following his military service he farmed and was a truck driver. Joe Boozer, age 75, of Central City, died at 4:35 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2011, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Joe was born Jan. 27, 1936, in Kell, the son of John and Myrtle (Creel) Boozer. He married Glenna Sharp on Aug. 10, 1956, in Mt. Vernon and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Boozer is survived by a son, Dale Boozer and wife Paula of Central City; brothers, James Boozer and wife Lavin of Kell and Ray Boozer and wife Dee of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Judy Easton of Dix; and two grandchildren, Brittany Nicole and Skylar Neal. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Tanga Boozer; a grandson, Dokken Ryan; and two sisters, Mary Ann Boozer and Betty Boozer. Joe was a laborer at Hindman Manufacturing for 18 years and was a member of First General Baptist Church. He lived in Central City for 47 years. Phillip Wayne "Phil" Highsmith, 62, of Belleville, born Thursday, Oct. 7, 1948, in Mt. Vernon, died Friday, April 22, 2011, at home surrounded by loved ones after a hard fought battle with cancer. Phil graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1966. He attended Illinois State University on a football scholarship, playing center for the Redbirds. He earned a B.S. in educationin 1970. He was a talented and popular athlete well known for his hijinks in high school, college and beyond. Phil taught and coached for over 30 years at Belleville West High School until his retirement in 2005. After retiring, he continued to volunteer at many athletic events to support the Mighty Maroons. He also enjoyed playing farmer with his buddies at S & M Dairy Farm. He was preceded in death by his parents, C. Wayne and Rubye Jeanne, nee Wilson, Highsmith and his beloved grandmother, Myrtle "Grampies" Highsmith, nee Williams. He is survived by his daughters, Stacey Highsmith of Denver, Colo. and Amy Highsmith (Ezra Bowman) of Denver, Colo.; two adored grandchildren, a granddaughter Charlotte Grace Highsmith Bowen and a grandson, Oliver Phillip Bowman; brother, Curt R. (Carol) Highsmith of Millstadt; niece, Christa Highsmith (Joel Chartrand) of Honolulu, Hawaii; nephew, Curtis "Chad" Highsmith of Belleville; godson, Lance Mayer of Belleville; as well as the mother of his children, Sandy Highsmith, nee Tattrie. The family would like to extend deep gratitude to all of Phil's physicians, nurses and close friends for contributing to the quality of his life over the length of his illness. I had a quote of the probate,from Sheila Cadwalader,and Pat Corona stated she had posted it back in 2005. She only had part of it with Thomas and Lucinda (Hillen)Robinsons dau. Ruth.
