MT. VERNON - Hazel E. Jones, formerly of Bluford, passed away April 21, 2011, at Bethesda Dilworth in St. Louis, Mo. She was born July 3, 1909, in Meridian Township, Clinton County, to Henry and Alice (Charlton) Lippert. She married Charles Lincoln Jones on April 28, 1929. Mrs. Jones is survived by a niece, Bertie Rader and husband Bill of St. Louis, Mo.; a great-niece, Carla Juelfs and husband John, also of St. Louis, Mo.; and a special friend, Sandra L. Richardson of Bluford. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Lydia (Lippert) Hake. Hazel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bluford and served as church clerk for 35 years from 1959 to 1994. She was the treasurer for the village of Bluford from October 1974 through March 6, 1978, and again from Dec. 4, 1978, through May 1998. After retiring, she moved to St. Louis, Mo., to be near her niece and great-niece. She will be missed by family and friends. Private services were held at Kutis Affton Chapel with burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia. Mr. Smith was born on Saturday, October 1, 1910 in East St. Louis, Illinois the son of the late Allen R. and Sovilla (Burkhalter) Smith. He married Ruby C. Clemins Scrivner in Bluford, Illinois on November 7, 1947 and she preceded him in death on November 23, 2008. Surviving family members include his 2 sons: Allen Smith and wife Toni of Bluford, Illinois and Artie Paul Smith and wife Cheryl of Bluford, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren also survive. His parents, wife, three brothers: Wesley, Bill and Charles Smith, one sister: Dorothy, one grandson: Cameron and two daughters-in-law: Ruth and Martha preceded him in death. Jack was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy, retired farmer, electrician and plumber. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Delmond and Pam Ellis of Murphysboro and David and Pam Ellis of Pittsburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois (Janiece) and Donald Penrod of Pomona, Kathy and Randy Wheaton of Jonesboro and Karen and Jack Hicks of Pomona; three daughters-in-law, Ruth Ellis of California, Mo., Goldie Ellis of Pomona and Norma Ellis of Murphysboro; 28 grandchildren; and 101 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, all whom she loved very much. She also leaves behind a wonderful sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Eldin Rea of Granite City; and two loved sisters-in-law, Ruth Fuller and Roberta Fuller, both of Granite City; as well as seven stepchildren and many nieces and nephews. Crettie was a homemaker, and a wonderful cook. She loved to sew, especially for her family. She had no limits to what she could make. Most of all she loved church and attended regularly until her health prevented it, but always kept a song and praise in her heart. She was preceded in death by her parents; her three husbands, Howard Orvil Ellis, Clarence "Bob" Franklin and Lee Batson; an infant daughter, Leone; three sons, Deon, Leon and Eldon; several grandchildren; and two brothers, James and Wayne Fuller. The family greatly appreciated Blue West Team of Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., for their compassion and care for Crettie. She was loved deeply and will be missed greatly. MT. VERNON - John D. Lemmon, 82, died at 7:30 a.m. April 29, 2011, at his home. He was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Scheller, to Gale and Mattie (Campbell) Lemmon. He married Dorothy (Wilson) Lemmon on June 18, 1952. They had three children, Jackie Hayes of Belle Rive, Gary Peyton of Aurora, Colo., and Donna Jean (deceased). He is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, James Lemmon, Charles Lemmon and Glen Lemmon. He was a retired Seg. Major from the military and also retired after 15 years from the postal service. He was a member of Wayne City Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Archie L. Melba Inez Martin Knolhoff, 95, of Centralia, formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Centralia Manor. She was born Tuesday, June 18, 1915, in Springerton, a daughter of Charles A. and Delphia (Miller) Balsover. She married William W. Martin in Belleville on Oct. 5, 1933, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1956. She later married Ronald Sisk in Mt. Vernon on Jan. 12, 1961, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1982. She later married Lawrence H. Knolhoff in Mt. Vernon on April 13, 1985, and he survives. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. April 28, 2011 Toddler Drowns in Local Pond By TESA CULLItesa.culli@register-news.com MT. VERNON — Numerous local agencies were called to find a missing 2-year-old this afternoon, who was later found in a pond near his home and died as a result of drowning. According to Jefferson Fire Protection District Chief Mike Huntman, the child had been missing about 45 minutes when he was found by his mother in the pond. Emergency responders at the scene worked to resuscitate Wesley P. Houser, who was transported to St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m. The report came in to county 911 dispatch at 1:55 p.m. that a child was missing from the yard of a home in the 18000 block of East Saddle Club Road, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Roger Mulch. JFPD put out a call for all available volunteers to help with the search, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was on scene and Littons Ambulance not only responded, but also put out a call for volunteers to aid in the search. The Illinois State Police responded to the call and about 17 troopers were en route as well as the Salem South Baptist Search and Rescue team to help with the search already underway by family and friends when the child was found in the pond, located near the residence. The Mt. Vernon Police Department K-9 unit was on the way when the boy was found, and MVPD blocked intersections through the city to allow the ambulance to arrive at the hospital safely as paramedics worked to revive him. Wesley Houser is the son of 31-year-old Michelle Donley and 37-year-old Brian Houser. “This was a tragic accident,” Mulch said. “The Sheriff’s Office wishes to express sincere sympathy to the family of Wesley. Vernon, passed away at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Clarksville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville, Tenn. She was born in Wisconsin on Tuesday, May 11, 1937, to Fred and Esther (Hanaman) Markley. She married Jerry Dwaine Sexton on Nov. 20, 1956, in Junction City, Kan., and he preceded her in death on March 30, 2010. Eva was a homemaker, worked in housekeeping at a motel and was a nursing home custodian. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Sheets officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to service time at the church. Mrs. Sexton is survived by two sons, Tom Sexton and wife Cheri of Clarksville, Tenn., and Tony Sexton of Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Connie Smith and husband Dwayne of Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Skip Rickert; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Her parents and her husband preceded her in death.
