Hi Sandy, Thanks so much for your reply. The information you have given me, I already know. I've been trying to find them before 1872. I've tried to find Calvin's parents in the census records to no avail. Their names are Leavis Ishmael and Sarah Bonds. I was wondering if Leavis could actually be Lewis. On Calvin's death certificate, Leavis is from Tenn. and Sarah is from Missouri. Calvin is buried in a Fresno, CA cemetery, but can not find him there either. In Journal Star of Peoria, Illinois on June 10,2011 (photo included) EUGENE TOPPER *WEST PEORIA *- Eugene "Gene" Topper, age 73, of West Peoria passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Lutheran Hillside Village Nursing Center in Peoria. Gene lost his battle with cancer after just being diagnosed in January. He was born July 2, 1937, in Mount Vernon, Ind., to Elby and Leoma (Hanmore) Topper. He married Marianne Lumberry on Oct. 23, 1976. She survives along with one brother, Donald (Joyce) Topper of West Peoria; two nieces, Katie (Kim) Shadley of Peoria and Jonell (Joseph) Madden of Des Plains, Ill.; and one sister-in-law, Roberta Lumberry of Peoria. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Topper. He was raised on the south side of Peoria and graduated from Manual High in 1955. Gene was a Navy veteran, where he worked on jet turbine motors. Following his time in the military, he was employed by Hiram Walker for 23 years and later worked for Mitsubishi, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the city of West Peoria zoning board. He was gracious, kind, loving and good hearted. Gene's talent was that he could fix anything. We will miss his smile, his warm nature and his wonderful ability to make someone smile. Funeral services will be Monday, June 13, 2011, at 12 noon at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bartonville. The Rev. Philip Lund will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to the services on Monday at the church. Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery with military rites accorded. Carolyn Sue Ellingsworth passed away June 7, 2011, at her home in Hampton, Va. She was born Jan. 28, 1941, in Herrin, to the late Herman Lee and Genieva Helen (Stone) Roland. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Herman Charles Roland. Sue lived a full life. She grew up in Herrin and Gilchrist, Ore. Sue moved to Mt. Vernon and married Forrest Ellingsworth in 1963. Their life together took them to Oregon, Texas, New Mexico, North Carolina and Kentucky. They later settled in Hampton, Va. A love of the ocean made the Carolina outer banks and Ocracoke Island her favorite places to visit. Sue is survived be her husband, Forrest; daughter, Cherise; son, David Scott Ellingsworth and wife Vicky; granddaughter, Morgan; brother, Don Roland; sister, Cathy Frazier; special aunt, Margaret Farmer; and a host of relatives and lifelong friends. The family will receive guests at 2 p.m. Sunday with memorial service at 3 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Rachel Duncan, 90, formerly of Dahlgren and late of Mt. Vernon, died 12:40 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2011, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born July 30, 1920, in Dahlgren, the daughter of Gordon and Bessie (Learned) Duncan. She is survived by a brother, George (wife Iris) Duncan of Belle Rive; and nieces and nephews Sharon (husband Larry) Gowler and family of Mt. Vernon; Sue (husband Larry) Sal and family of Michigan, David (wife Linda) McNeal and family of Michigan and Steven (wife Terry) McNeal and family of Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parent; two sisters, Vivian and husband Adron Cross and Letitia and husband Mac McNeal; and two brothers, H.L. and wife Nana Duncan and Oren and wife Fritzi Duncan. Ms. Duncan was a retired registered nurse. She was a member of the retired military officers association and a retired Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Air Force, having served as a registered nurse during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. She was a member of Dahlgren Baptist Church. Rebekah Elizabeth Stemm, age 50, of Mount Vernon, IL. passed away at 5:15 p.m. Thursday June 9, 2011 at Nature Trail health Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Rebekah was born on March 8, 1961 in Ashland, Kentucky a daughter of Thomas H. and Eleanor (Smith) Wyatt. Ms. Stemm first worked for VNA for several years and later worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon for fifteen years. She was a member of the Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon. Rebekah is survived by her mother, Eleanor and husband Hollis Miller of Indianapolis, Indiana; daughter, Aimee and husband Kenny Branch of Belleville, Illinois; son, Jason Stemm and wife Trish of Belleville, Illinois; brother, Steve Wyatt of Phoenix, Arizona; sister, Debbie and husband John Willis of Centralia; and also five grandchildren Khristion Stemm, Jeremiah Stemm, Ethan Stemm, Kenzie Branch and Jacob Branch. . Keith Dewayne Summers left this earth for his Heavenly home Thursday, June 9, 2011. He was a resident of Country Side Living Facility prior to his passing. Keith was born in Central Illinois on August 28, 1958. His parents Harvey and Johnnie (Newcomb) Summers from Springfield, Missouri survive. He is also survived by his daughters: Bridgette Summers and her fiancee Ryan Strine and Hillary Summers both of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 2 granddaughters: Kileigh Irwin and Alyce Summers both of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; grandson: Preston Porter of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 3 brothers: Mike Summers and wife Linda of Springfield, Missouri, Richard Summers and wife Holly of Ozark, Missouri and Billy Clawson of Illinois; two sisters: Pat Johns and husband Barry of Springfield, Missouri and Sherry Bloomenstock and husband Gary of South Carolina. He also had many nieces and nephews including: John Cook of Ina, Illinois and several aunts, uncles and cousins and a host of many special friends who he loved. Keith was preceded in death by one daughter: Magen Summers. Keith was s US Army Veteran and served honorably in Germany in an Engineering unit. He worked in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning field most of his life and in the maintenance department for the Mt. Vernon Township High School and also later in the construction field. He was a high caliber person. Keith was a Christian and Baptized in Missouri on August 28, 2010. MT. VERNON - Chad Michael True, age 36, of Irvington, died on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, near St. Rose as a result of a traffic accident. Chad was born on Nov. 8, 1974, in Nashville, the son of Michael True and Brenda (Fark) Plassman. Mr. True is survived by his father and stepmother, Mike and Melody True of Woodlawn; his mother and stepfather, Brenda and David Plassman of Shiloh; a son, Evan True of Bethany; a sister, Stacey Hall and husband Mike of Belleville; stepbrothers, Matthew Plassman and wife Tiffany of Shiloh and Gabe Meador of Bloomington; a stepsister, Kerry Stricker and husband JR of Joplin, Mo.; a fiancé, Jessica Carpenter and daughters Shelby, Liz, Emma and Abby all of Irvington; aunts and uncles, Rick and Alice True, Pat True, Brad and Karen Meyer and Ron Fark; and numerous cousins. He was a member of Richview United Methodist Church and lived the last five years in Irvington and prior to that in Richview. Chad loved music and older muscle cars. He played the drums in numerous bands beginning in the fifth grade. He also enjoyed riding his Harley. Friends may call Saturday from 5 to8 p.m. at the Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia. MT. VERNON - Donald E. Sargent, 76, died Thursday, June 9, 2011, in New Whiteland, Ind. He was a resident of New Whiteland, Ind., and Mt. Vernon. Donald was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Mt. Vernon. to Pearl and Lucille (Cooper) Sargent. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran. He married Shirley A. Tate on May 28, 1957, in Indianapolis; they were married for 54 years. He was employed with the federal government as an electronics technician at Naval Avionics Center for over 25 years, retiring in 1996. Donald enjoyed woodworking, carpentry and repairing any electronic device. He loved air shows and local stock car racing. Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Sargent of New Whiteland, Ind.; three children, Michael (Tammy) Sargent and Mark (Cathy) Sargent, both of Greenwood, Ind., and Greg (Kim) Sargent of Mt.Vernon; one step-brother, James Alexander of Evansville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Josh List, Olivia Davis, Cory, Jon-Michael, Luke, Jacob Sargent; and three great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jocelynn List and Rece Davis. MT. VERNON - Roger C. Luer, 62, of Walnut Hill, passed away at 3:21 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2011, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born Aug. 9, 1948, in Litchfield, the son of Charles A. and Arlene D. (Ruhrup) Luer. He married Judy A. Schlueter on March 27, 1971, at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Centralia, and she survives in Walnut Hill. In addition to his wife, Mr. Luer is survived by one son, Nicholaus C. Luer and wife Jennifer (Manion) Luer of Mt. Vernon; his parents, Charles A. Luer and Arlene D. Luer of Savoy; two sisters, Londa J. Rohlfing and husband Charles of Savoy and Laurel B. Long and husband Bruce of Waelder, Texas; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Luer was a member of the St. Peter United Church of Christ in Centralia since 1966, and was previously a member of the St. Peter United Church of Christ in Champaign. He was a founding member of the church's mission board, member and past president of the church council, chairman of the church's Wurstmart and served on the search committee. He was an award-winning photographer who loved to travel to take his photographs. He was a member of the Light & Lens Club in Centralia and a board member of the Centralia Cultural Society. He was a member and past president of the the Centralia Jaycees and was named the Jaycee International Senator in 1977. He was a charter member of the Southern Illinois JEEP Association. He was previously a Centralia City councilman for eight years and served as chairman of the Centralia Halloween Parade. He was named as one of the 10 "Outstanding Young People in Illinois" in 1980. He graduated with honors from the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago in 1969, and attended Kaskaskia College in Centralia from 1967 to 1968. He also graduated from the Ray Vogue School of Photography in Chicago in 1967 and Champaign High School in Champaign in 1966. He has lived most of his life in Centralia. Mr. Luer was a partner of Flawless Fotos with his son Nicholaus, and daughter-in-law Jennifer. He retired on Dec. 31, 2010, as a membership sales representative from Air Evac Lifeteam. He previously was employed as an interstate sales representative for Motorola Inc., and formerly was an insurance agent with the Justice-Luer Insurance Agency for 16 years. Earlier in life, he was a family funeral director and embalmer for the Luer Funeral Home in Centralia from 1970 until 1981. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the St. Peter United Church of Christ in Centralia with the Rev. Lisa Hart officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Mt. Vernon. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Styninger Queen-Boggs Funeral Home in Centralia and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at 11 a.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Luer's honor to the St. Peter United Church of Christ Mission Board for the Dubois Center, and will be received at the Styninger Queen~Boggs Funeral Home. He appears in 1880 census, Spring Garden twnsp, Jefferson Co.,b. 1876. He first marr'd Dora Lachot in Jefferson Co,Illinois 1899. He appears in 1900 census Pulaski Co.,Illinos with Dora b. 1876. He evidently divorced or Dora died because he goes to Rogers Co. ,Okla. His Draft Card there has him: Warren Smith Drew born 10 June 1876, living in Rogers, Ark. He states he is: Indian. I am sure it was the 1820 census of Rogers, Okla. m to a Lydia who has a child Josie by previous marriage. In every case he is listed as born in Illinois. He evidently comes back to Jefferson County as he is buried in New Hope Cem. States he was born 10 June 1875 (prob mis-read because of all other sources); d. 13 Apr. 1938. Myrtle Alma Pickens 92, died at 6:38 p.m. Sunday June 5, 2011 at Residential Living Center in Mt. Vernon. She was born in Thebes, IL on January 24, 1919, the daughter of Alvin Cyrille and Bertha Rose (Cook) Brawn, also of Thebes, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Pickens married H.H. "Bill" Pickens on February 26, 1938; Mr. Pickens died in August 30, 1973. "Myrt" was a beautician during World War II but after the war she focused her attention on her real love, Cocker Spaniels. She operated 'My Pick' kennels in Thebes, Mt. Vernon, West Frankfort, and Jackson, MO. Mrs. Pickens enjoyed great success showing and breeding Cocker Spaniels, and for many years was recognized by the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club as one of America's foremost authorities of the breed. Myrtle was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Marion , a lifelong member of National Federation of Republican Women and the VFW Ladies Auxillary in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Memorial Service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday June 18, 2011 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (1801 West Minster Drive) in Marion , Pastor Mark P. Surburg will officiate. Private interment will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thebes. Found him in 1900 census Palaski Co.,Ill. with wife Dora J. b. 1883 and can't locate after this except I found a Warren Smith Drew m to a Lydia in Collinsville, Rogers Co.,Ok. SPRINGFIELD - Byron E. Skinner, 71, passed away at 10:25 A.M. Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born January 15, 1940 in Springfield, IL to Jesse and Bertha (Murrell) Skinner. He married Mary E. Marlin on January 22,1961 in Mt. Vernon, IL. Byron served four years in the U. S. Navy and later retired as a MSGT from the U. S. Air Force. He was a Sangamon County Deputy, later joining the Illinois Bureau of Investigation (I.B.I.). He was a member of the Illinois State Police Investigative Unit and retired as a MSGT, a member of the State Police Association, a forty-three year member of the Divernon Lodge #1158 AF&AM, a licensed pilot with an instrument license, and a member of the Rochester United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Sheryl Covington (husband, Michael) of Springfield; one son, Michael E. Skinner of Rochester; three grandchildren: Bobby Liberman, Cheyanne Covington and Torri Covington; three sisters: Shirley Gray (husband, Harry) of Peoria, Joyce Faron of Centralia, Janice Eby (husband, Sterling) of Glenarm; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 7 from 4 until 7 P.M. at the Wilson Park Funeral Home in Rochester, IL. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home with Reverend Jack Swank officiating. Burial will follow in Brush Creek Cemetery in Divernon. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society .
