DAHLGREN - Omar Edward "Eddie" Allen passed away July 16, 2013, in his home surrounded by family. He was born April 3, 1933, in Dahlgren, to Helen M. (Wilson ) and Omar E. "Petie" Allen. Mr. Allen was corporal in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. Eddie was a barber by trade, graduating from Barber College in 1957 and retiring in 1995. The barbershop is still open on Main Street in Mount Vernon. Civic minded, he served on Mount Vernon Township High School Board, the Mount Vernon Downtown Development Commission. He was an elected president of the Illinois Racking Horse Association, and coached Khoury League ball. During the 1980's, Eddie was the radio voice of McLeansboro Foxes on WMIX and was an integral community member of the Foxes' winning season, creating and singing his own version of " Put Another Log on the Fire!" Omar loved music. His first musical love was barbershop harmony. He sang, directed and coached quartets and choruses throughout Southern Illinois. Eddie won an international championship in 1959, singing tenor with the KordKickers. He was still teaching tags to a small group gathered at the farm in Dahlgren, less than a month ago. Eddie loved sports almost as much as music. He earned a second Grand National title working Allen's Little Lou during the AKC field trial championship in 1988. He won his third National Championship title at the National Racking Horse Celebration in 1994, riding Shasta's Delight. Sadly, the "Cuz" took the westbound before his Chicago Cubs ever came close to winning a single championship. This did not keep him from watching or listening to the thousands of Cubs' broadcasts during his lifetime. His romance with radio broadcasting guided him into his post-retirement career. In 2000, following his initial cancer diagnosis, Eddie started his morning radio program "The Cuzin Eddie Show," on WMCL radio in McLeansboro. His eclectic mix of musical guests, old time radio recreations, reading, talking and laughing entertained his listening audience for 10 years. Some of his celebrity guests included Kitty Wells, Eddie Rabbit, and Billy Grammar. He truly loved sharing his airtime with local talent, guests and callers. The local celebrities were his favorites. Mr. Allen is survived by his spouse, Sabrina Kae; a brother, Howard (Lorie) Allen; three children, Daniel (Michele) Allen, of Dahlgren, Pamela (Steve) Mandrell of Waltonville, Owen (Pamela) Allen of Ina; three stepchildren, Michelle Stevens, Nicole Karcher and Courtney Alvarez; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He liked to say he had a hand in raising a whole bunch of kids and he was proud of all of them. Omar Edward Allen will be cremated and requested no services. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. A celebration of life is being planned for Oct. 12, in Dahlgren. The family will announce the details soon. Gholson funeral home of McLeansboro is in charge of arrangements. Published in The Southern Illinoisan on July 18, 2013

Bob and Sandy, Will try and answer both of your questions in this one e-mail. Bob, The LEWIS ancestry of Lonnie is not connected to the LEWIS family you and I share in common, please note the birthplaces of Bristol in the following line: Ettie M dau of James Madison LEWIS and Lucy Annette (LNU) [both born in Brighton, England] This is noted in my file, so I must have traced this down in the past, wondering about the same possibility of another cross-link between the families. Sandy, Her name was Lucy Ann. She was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery by Greenberry, and her headstone is so engraved. I suspect the census enumerator spelled what he heard, and if the 'c' in Lucy is pronounced just a bit hard, and the names are run together he would have heard "Loosyann" with a hard 's' sound. In addition, even the oldest family history handwritten references (dating back to the late 1800s) to the marriage with Greenberry list her maiden name as Lucy Ann CHRISTIAN. I can remember hearing when growing up, some of the older generation (including an old Cajun who came north to mine coal - who let us seine his pond for crawdads for bait so long as he got to pick out what he wanted to cook [I ate with him, they were good]) referring to the State down south as 'Loosiann' or 'Loosianna' where the 's' is hard, almost a 'z' sound. So, the entry is understandable. Trust you are both well. Thanks Kim. I wondered if that was the case or she just changed it when she came north. I made several trips to New Orleans and had a very good friend that was Cajun. I know what you mean about how they pronounce words and names. Like you I love crawfish when they're prepared right (at least the tails). Crawfish Etoufee is fabulous. I remember visiting my friend at her home in New Orleans suburb and we went out to the boats where they bring in seafood and got a bunch of crawfish. We took them home and she boiled them and then covered the table in newspapers and dumped the huge pot of crawfish on the table and we sat there peeling and eating them like shrimp, just eating the tails. Yummy! James Wood who died 1855 had a son John E. Wood, born about 1840, Indiana, living with the step-mother Susannah Lewis in Jefferson Co. 1860, and not found after that. Most of the known survivors returned to Indiana after James' death--family lore specifically reports that someone from here 'went to Illinois to bring them back.' Thanks for all your help! Rev. Dale R Brown, 87, of Osceola , IN , moved into heaven Monday, July 15, 2013 . Cancer had ravaged his body but did not touch his spirit. His advice to his children, Ron and Norma Brown of Bloomington , IL , Sherry and Walter Hogan of Bristol , VA , and Roger & Teresa Brown of Osceola , IN was "... Don't give up!" He lived his advice, serving as pastor of 29 churches in 7 states. His ministry started at age 16. Signs and wonders followed his pastorates. His wife, Betty Lou (Meyers) Brown, was healed of polio and worked diligently with him until her death in September, 2012. Their marriage of 66 years, and care for each other was witness to the marriage promise they made to each other. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, (Hebrews 12:2) he leaves his legacy with his 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 4 sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Melva Brown and one brother, James Brown. His legacy is established with his children serving the Lord. A Navy veteran, he served in the Philippines during WW II. He was a graduate of Mt Vernon, IL, high school; student at Bethel Seminary, Mishawaka , IN ; Lee College extension in Florida ; and East Coast Bible College in North Carolina . He had an early interest in technology and embraced the Internet. Even into his final years you would find him with his iPad & iPhone. He enjoyed FaceTime conversations with family and friends. He enjoyed golf, which he mastered after retirement. Annual golfing trips to Myrtle Beach with family and friends spanned over 30 years. He got his first 'hole-in-one' at age 84. But more important than golf or technology was his passion for his Lord. Thousands of men, women, boys and girls made a personal commitment to serve the Lord during his pastoral ministry. So his advice to family and friends is '... Don't give up'. Press on toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14) A celebration of his life will be at Newell Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, IL, with visitation Sunday, July 21, from 2:00 - 3:00 pm, with service following. Internment will be in Wolf Prairie Cemetery . Memorials may be made to the Wolf Prairie Cemetery Association, and accepted at the funeral home.

He was a physician, born about 1792, Ireland. He was married twice in Indiana, Susannah Shelby (1820) and Susannah Favors (1844). James, wife Susannah #2 and many children moved from Bartholomew Co., Indiana to Jefferson Co., IL, after 1850, and he died there before 1860. Susannah and two of the children were still in Jefferson Co. in 1860, but most of the children in that family eventually returned to Indiana. Is there a marked grave or estate record for James Wood? Did Susannah remarry in Illinois after 1860? She was born about 1803, Kentucky. Thanks for any light you can shed on this inquiry!
