    2. Debra "Debbie" Kay McCullum, age 29, of Bonnie, IL, passed away at her home on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 of natural causes. Debbie graduated from Salem Community High School in 2003 and from Kaskaskia College in 2005 with a degree in Culinary Arts. She was employed on the dietary staff at Green Tree at Mt. Vernon. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Salem. A celebration of life service for Debbie will be held on Friday, July 26th, 2013 at 2:00pm at Grace United Methodist Church in Salem. Interment will follow at East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Thursday, July 25th, 2013 at Rankin Funeral Home in Slame. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be recieved at the funeral home in hopes of setting up a SCHS scholarship fund for a student wishing to pursue a degree in culinary arts. Debbie is survived by her parents, Rick and Ann McCullum of Salem; one sister, Christina Miller and husband Neil, and two nephews, Abram and Alec Miller, of Centralia; her paternal grandmother, Connie McCullum of Minnetonka, MN, and her maternal grandparents, Chris and Alive Woods of Edina, MN; and a host of Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.     2. Gerald “Jerry” Smith, 75, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 3:00 A.M. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at his home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Jerry was born on June 24, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois the son of the late Charles and Lucille (Miller) Smith.  He married Patricia Young Marcotte on February 2, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois at St. Edward’s Catholic Church. Surviving family members include his wife: Patricia Yvonne Smith of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 2 brothers: Donald Smith and wife Jayneyce of Montgomery, Illinois and Fred Smith and partner Everett of San Diego, California; sister-in-law: Kathleen Elkins and husband Kyle of Valparaiso, Indiana; 22 nieces and nephews also survive. His parents, inlaws: Armand and Theresa Marcotte, five brothers: Ralph, Bill, Jim, Bobby and Howard Smith and two sisters: Betty Powell and Patricia Weichinger preceded him in death.    Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force, was an electrician for Union Local 134 in Chicago, Illinois, was an avid investor, tinkerer, he enjoyed home repair projects, beer making and taking care of his 40 acres. He was a avid book reader who loved visiting with people and was quite a conversationalist.    Celebration of Life Service: will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 2, 2013 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois and he preceded her in death on June 20, 1991.  Surviving family members include her 2 sons: David Hampton and wife Paula of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Mark Hampton and wife Kim of Greenbrier, Tennessee; 6 grandchildren: Jennifer Poole of Greenbrier, Tennessee, Chad Hampton of Mt.     2. Billie Jane Kovach, 83, of Benton, died at 10:32 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.Mrs. Kovach was born on Nov. 5, 1929, in Hazel Park, Mich., the daughter of Talbert Wall and Bonnie (Rich) Wall. She married William Kovach on Dec. 11, 1948, and he survives.Billie was a telephone operator in Christopher prior to marrying her husband William. After marrying William, she and her husband purchased and operated the Southside Market on South Main Street in Benton for ten years during the 1950’s. Soon after they sold the store, they purchased a laundry mat on North Madison Street which became Kovach Koin Laundry, which they operated for about thirty years. Billie enjoyed traveling, fishing, wood carving, painting and stained glass. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benton and the Road Runners Camping Group in Mt.     2. Rosemary "Rosie" Wanjiru Githinji, 28, of Kokomo, Ind., formerly of Farina, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Rosie was born Tuesday, May 14, 1985, in Nairobi, Kenya, the daughter of Solomon Githinji and Connie (Johnson) Githinji. She attended Kaskakia Community College and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. While at Edwardsville, Rosie was a reporter and the opinion/managing editor at the Alestle student newspaper and an active member of the student body. Rosie interned at the Alton Telegraph in Alton. She won journalism awards in state-wide competitions. She graduated with a BA in Mass Communications with an emphasis in print and electronic journalism and a minor in speech communications in December of 2011 from SIUE. Rosie was a past employee of Jack Flash BP in Farina and the Mt. Vernon Register-News as a general assignment reporter and photographer in Mt. Vernon. She was working for the Kokomo Perspective as the city beat reporter in Kokomo, Ind. Rosie worked on 4U Mornings for the Perspective as well. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by many, all over the world, including her birthplace, Kenya, in East Africa. She is survived by her parents, Solomon and Con nie Githinji of Farina; sisters, Susan Githinji of Albuquerque, N.M. and Ann Githinji of Seattle; and grandfather, Richard Johnson of Cudahey, Wis. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nadene Githinji and her grandmother, Nadene Johnson. Arrangements are being handled by J.W.
